Hi,
I know I have seen this answer somewhere, but Google didn't do any
help this time.
I have a pc with win98"FIRST" edition. When I boot up I get a dos
error that vmm32.vxd can not be found.
I have tried reloading the win 98 1st edition, up grade from 95 and it
says that the software can not be used for upgrade.
Anyone have aniy thoughts on this.
Thanks for the time and help.

Try this link Dan.

That should help you (print it out so that you're able to follow the steps
more easily.)

You need to be very explicit in your dictation of the way the error message
reads. The KB lists about 15 possible solutions to your problem. Go here:
http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?query=vmm32.vxd&cata
log=LCID%3D1033&pwt=false&title=false&kt=ALL&mdt=0&comm=1&ast=1&ast=2&ast=3&
mode=a Let us know if you can recover without reinstalling 95'. I don't
think C:scanreg /restore from a DOS prompt will help but it might.

This should straighten you out

http://www.easydesksoftware.com/news/news10.htm

Once you get back into Windows, backup that file.
As you just found out, it is CRITICAL.

You can also do what Microsoft neglected to do

Click Start, then click Run

Type SCANREG.INI and click OK

At the end of the file, add the following 2 lines

Files=30,io.sys,msdos.sys
Files=11,vmm32.vxd

Close Notepad

Click Start, then click Run

Type MSCONFIG and click OK

Click STARTUP and make sure that ScanRegistry is enabled

That will create backups of those 3 files in your RB*.CAB files.

Hugh, I really like that fix that you provided about the Control Panel
available in the 98SE start menu. It really is awesome and thank you so
very, very much for help in adding it to my computer.
