View Full Version : Shortcut Overlay Arrows

Resubmiting due to spelling error in "Subject"!
-
Some of the desktop icons have little white shortcut overlay arrows on the
bottom left. Tweak UI does not eliminate them as it should. I had this
problem before and found a solution from MS Knowlege Base but now my search
does not turn up anything.
Can anyone help? Thank You!

I am running WIN98SE.

Keep your arrows, unless William Tell was your great grandfather. There
are times to know what you are dealing with, shortcut or no.
Furthermore, you are lucky all that happened is you lost your tweak.
Another possibility is that the update might have crashed, had the tweak
been more intrusive. There is a tweak that messes with "ISSHORTCUT" in
the Registry that causes mayhem. If you really don't like the look of
things, just try a new Theme or Scheme, and let those arrows be!

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
PCR

Jane,

That site contains the tweak that PCR cautioned against. When it is used,
it can cause double entries to be created in the right click context menu
and most would prefer an arrow to that mess.

Hi Ron,
I'm sorry if I clashed, but I only answered as I have
been using that tweak for over six months and never had
a problem with. I also have my tweakui set as well.

Hi again Ron,
I am also running Win98oem, standard vanilla stuff, perhaps
that is why I've never had a prob?
Certainly wouldnt steer anyone toward a problem intentionally.
Btw, thanks for your tip regarding getting a photo of myself in
the Device Manager area (general), took a bit of messing to get it
to the right size .bmp, but have had it for over 3months, including
some blurb behind the Support Button.
Thanks

Hi Jane,

No clash here--it appeared you did not know about the possible problem with
the context menu. I believe that when there is a possible side effect, we
ought to caution users and let them sort out whether or not they want to use
the procedure.

I had a sure fire way of getting rid of the arrow when I used W98--I did not
have any shortcuts (except the ones without arrows) on my desktop. The
arrow does not appear in shortcuts in the QL or start menu.

I, for one, don't understand the burning need to get rid of the arrows.
I *like* my icons to accurately describe what they represent, <s>.

I actually liked the light arrows because I am kind of picky in how my
desktop looks. However, I accept the black arrows and so life goes on. :>

But gary, the icons still refer to their root,
just dont have arrows smudging them out.

But the icons are *not* the target. They are shortcuts to the target.
Entirely different animals. I like to know what's a shortcut and what's
a real thing. The arrow immediately distinguishes the two and that's
important to someone like me who isn't interested in appearances, only
reality.

BTW, Gary have you seen the Matrix? I liked this movie but I would like to
know if you like the original Matrix at all.

No, you're missing it.

Shortcut files don't display their file name extension, even when you
have file name extensions unhidden. IOW, the name of a file that's
really ReadMe.TXT.pif will be displayed as ReadMe.TXT

Shortcut files are dangerous in two ways:

1) By design, they point to and "open" arbitrary targets of any type

IOW, if the path is predictable, or will be automatically applied, a
shortcut can run any code file on your system. More to the point, it
can pass parameters to that code file. For example, DELTREE.EXE can
be automated to delete "My Documents" without prompting, etc.

An obvious defence against this is to avoid predictable paths, and not
store data on the desktop (as that's often the default context for an
unspecified "Delete *.* "). But wait; it gets worse...

2) By defect, they can contain raw code themselves

By intention, .pif files are supposed to be pointers to DOS programs.
But there's no sanity-checking to ensure this is the case; in a raw
..EXE is renamed to .PIF, Windows is indeed stupid enough to run it as
raw code, rather than abort with an "invalif .PIF" error.

For this reason. .PIF files are popular for malware attack files. The
extension's never displayed, the icon can be set to anything (it's
derived from the contents of the file itself), and it runs as raw code
without further ado. The *ONLY* clue you have, is the shortcut arrow.

I suspect this may be why a security update "broke" the
hide-the-arrows functionality within Shell32.dll (which has been seen
as an unwanted side-effect of the update, in that it breaks the
ability of TweakUI to hide shortcut arrows).

Chris, my post below asked what you would have me add to my letter to
Microsoft about the maintenace operating system for XP PRO or any other NT
operating system since the NT operating system just uses a command.com prompt
with a DOS emulator and not a true maintenace operating system. Thanks in
advance for your input, Chris.

Not interested, thank you.

1. Shortcuts don't always point to EXE files. In fact, lots of them
don't.

2. There's nothing really inherently wrong about placing EXE files in
the Start Menu or on the desktop. I quite frequently put them on the
desktop, in fact. They're often called "Setup.exe." There are also a
couple of standalone EXEs that I quite often use that go well in the
Start\Programs\Startup folder, not to mention stand-alone EXEs or COMs
that are handy to put in the Accessories menu. If they're stand-alone,
requiring no installation--no DLLs, no other files involved, no Registry
or other configuration files--there's nothing at all wrong with it. Not,
perhaps, the most conventional way to do things, but they work just
fine.

3. The arrows don't show in the Start menu, anyway. So your entire
tirade, at least as regards the Start menu, is, well, idiotic.

> Your rivaling PCR for persistent stupidity.

Perhaps. But then, I have to look at the source of this statement,
someone who has apparently won the stupidity prize long ago and taken it
home for keeps. Relative to yourself, neither PCR nor I wouldn't even be
in the running. Go back to your sandbox until you can learn some manners
(not to mention spelling.)

Exactly, Richard. I made that mistake a while back by insulting Sandi, MVP.
Fortunately, Sandi forgave me quickly and I greatly appreciated it. I
definately am more careful now with my choice of words.

Sorry to burst your bubble. PCR but this is simply not the case. Although,
your posts can be very helpful, they are also usually long and drawn out
which can confuse a novice user. It is great to have the information but one
must carefully sift through the chaff in your posts to find the true wheat.
Now with that being said, I have no intention of insulting you but I wanted
my opinion to be known and also to make sure your pride stays in check.
<smile> Have a great day and take care PCR. Now a comparison between Gary
S. Terhune and Hugh Candlin would make me stop and pause because both of them
are really smart.

I am pleased to know I can write a long & drawn out post better than
Terhune ever did, EVEN in his incredible clean boot troubleshoot post OR
the one that devastates Device Manager!
