Unable to boot fixed

I have finally been able to find this group to post the correction to the
problem of being unable to boot my computer after format and to thank all
those that were able to help. I checked the knowledge base to check for tha
standard mode dos extender problem and one of the suggestions mentioned
memory chip problems. I have a 128MB and a 256 MB on the board so I decided
to take out the 128 MB the computer came right up and I was able to install
WIN 98 again. Just for the heck of it I took out the 256MB and returned the
128MB to the slot no problem it still worked. I then put back both of them
and it still worked--go figure.However I think the problem originally started
with the MODEM because the drivers didn't load so I disabled it in Control
Panel and had Road Runner installed.
It works again.

I am glad it worked. It sounds like you had a faulty ram connection.
Crucial provides good ram if you need to buy any ram in the future.

Thanks for letting us know it's working again.

If it was a RAM problem, then it is not unusual that it was fixed by
removing and re-inserting the modules. Corrosion can build up on the
contacts to the point that a connection becomes marginal - by removing and
replacing the modules the contacts are wiped against each other and the
corrosion removed.

Memory errors appear in strange forms, so it's even possible that the modem
problem had its basis in RAM errors.
