View Full Version : Windows 98 suddenly lost tab labels

My neighbor has a Windows 98 machine, which she uses for e-mail and also for
children's games for her granddaughter, who is about four. Since the last
time the little girl played with the computer, it has lost all the usual tab
labels. The Start button no longer says "Start," the minimize, maximize and
close buttons in the upper right of any program window are now completely
blank, so are the five tabs in Display Properties, and so on. Every kind of
tab label is missing. Restarting the machine doesn't bring anything back.
Needless to say, no one knows what the little girl did, if anything (she
says she shut down the machine as she always does).

Anyone have any idea what's going on here and/or how to restore the labels?
I'm at a complete loss, have never seen anything like this before.

Sounds like she may have deleted some fonts. C:\Windows\Fonts\Marlett.ttf,
for one, is responsible for the min/max/restore button graphics. Check
the appearance tab (3rd one from the left) in display properties. In the
"Item" drop-down find "Active Title Bar". Click it and check the Font
listed below. That one is responsiblre for the Start button also.

Use SFC to extract the missing fonts and direct it to put them in
\Windows\Fonts. Then reboot. If you want, I can give you a list of
fonts I have installed in a "default" Windows setup, so you can
see what else may be missing.

Control Panel-Display-Appearance tab.
Change the item: 3D Objects to a contrasting color as she has changed
it to match the objects, e.g. if the Start button, tabs and controls
are grey, then she has changed 3D Objects to grey instead of black.

Thanks! I'll try all that first and will reply again. I sure would
appreciate your posting that "default" list of fonts just to be safe, if
it's not too much trouble.

Perfect! That was exactly what the problem was, Alan.

Thanks a million!

Thanks very much for the list, Bill! I'll save that for just-in-case.

You're right, Alan's post identified the problem and it's now fixed.
