I am about to do an upgrade.
I wish to remain with Win98se, and just
use the computer for work, no gaming.

Can someone please recommend a suitable Motherboard and Chip
I can price.
Thanks

Best Motherboard Manufacturer? Asus, by a landslide.

I've got a 2-year old machine with an ASUS CUV4X-C motherboard.
Run W98SE - 800 megahertz Intel Pentium III - 384 Megabytes Installed Memory
Two HD's (C: 20 gig, D: 40 gig)
Use Ad_Aware and Spybot, along with Mailwasher Pro.
Together with the hardware firewall in the D-Link DI-604 router, I've had no
problem whatsoever with any trojans, viri (sp?) malware or any of that stuff.

Runs sweet - solid as a rock !

My 2 ¢ (maybe 5 ¢, considering inflation) worth. . . .

G'day John,

We are nearly two peas in a pod. :)
My system is very close, only I have been advised I cannot upgrade the
chip on the present MB, hence my desire for something a little faster.

If I crawl to my wife on hands and knees, she may allow me a
removable tray for my 120 Gb External HDD too.

My vote for this years "Cannot do without" software would be "Mailwasher"
and "Cookie Wall" both free, and both fantastic.

In fact it is my new years resolution to register "Mailwasher"

Thanks for the comments

Rodney, I would make sure that you don't get something that 98SE cannot
support. I think Gary Terhune has mentioned that a few of the newer hardware
technologies are not supported on 98SE. I am not sure which these are and
will let Gary Terhune comment since he knows a lot more than me in this area
and in a majority of areas involving pcs of course. :>

If you get a more current P4 or Celeron cpu, locate the WinME version of
ndis.vxd file and save it for the new install on the new motherboard.
You'll need it. Do this now, first, pronto.

I'd suggest a cpu/mobo combo, but you failed to mention what you are doing
for work. You might need the number crunching of P4, or not which means a
Celeron. Go the max 512 MB of RAM. And, you failed to mention if you want
to move a video card and/or sound card and/or LAN card and/or USB card, buy
another, or use onboard mobo, do you want firewire, SATA or PATA hard drive,
RAID, etc, etc, etc. These are key elements in mobo selection nowadays.
P4 mobos require a different power supply connection on the motherboard.

Hello Hugh,
Now that you have mentioned 'Asus by a landslide', would
you mind if I asked you what you would recommend as
2nd & 3rd if you couldnt get an Asus?
Its strictly a census type of thing on my part,
and naturally I am curious to see if mine comes
into mention,; naturally I cant say what mine is until
I hear your votes.

Thanks

Thank you Dan,
I'll request Asus and let the tech install the
best model that supports W98se.
The thought had crossed my mind regarding
the ability of some programs and high chip speeds,
but I put them in the "too hard " bin.
Old MSWorks Ver4.5a is about the oldest program I use.
Cheers

Ouch!
I understand very little of your possible sage advice.

I have a Visual FoxPro Database that is handled
well with my current "clunker", so that's no problem.
I have a USB card already installed
I will install a video card, but <Only> to allow Teletext Capture
No movies or TV.

I use the box for medium number crunching in Excel
but nothing too sophisticated

Cheers.

Rodney, please post back here what the ASUS tech. suggests and we can give
you more feedback and thus save you the heartache of having a poorly
configured machine. Lil' Dave has some really good points. Also, are you
planning to dual-boot with 98SE and XPPRO as I have done? Will you use 98SE
in Fat32 and XP PRO in NTFS as I have done? You need to make sure that you
have a strong enough power supply for your updated (new?) PC and also I would
suggest an uniteruptable power supply which I use. (UPS)

A new mobo and CPU isn't going to please you
if all you want to do is a little word processing
and spreadsheet crunching and webcrawling.

A 286 is a perfectly adequate word processor,
but now rendered obsolete as far as its capability
of running recent versions of Winword is concerned.

You have more than enough firepower for surfing also.

Intel if rock-solid reliability is your numero uno desire.
Abit if you want to overclock it until the steam rises.

With that said, it should be treated as a general guideline.
Some lesser known manufacturers can come up with
a gem that I may never find out about, and some of the
ones I mentioned may trot out a turkey now and then.
Intel has had a couple of snafus in that regard.

Hello Hugh,
the main reason for upgrade is <simply> to be able
to fit a new video card, which will allow Videotext capture,
that's all.

As a side issue, I have a 5 million record database,
and to do a subset each Friday night takes some
4-6 minutes. I was hoping the new chip would offer
some improvement there.

I gotta say, I have been seduced by seeing the speed
at which some computers in shops execute commands.
Sometimes when saving Works files, mine takes 1-2 seconds.
(which is probably a software issue anyhows)

Best Regards.

You're interest and concern is infectious :)
I shall post back, I am sure everything will be OK.
I don't expect much and am happy being in the comfortable

(In fact I am intending to have my set-up interred when
