Hello again,

I have a question that is likely not going to be answered even if I took the
time to figure out the manuals that came with my recently acquired
PowerQuest Partition Magic's software Version 8.x

I have an older, clone, motherboard (I'm a VAR, you see), that due to it's
internal limitations cannot see a hard disk over 125GB. This has to do with
the controller embedded being --- I think --- 32 bit, while I need a 48 bit
doozy.

So, I do have some add on card, an UltraTX 100 card, that I simply plug into
an open PCI slot (not easy mind you, as I had to remove my SoundBlaster Live
card to do so --- I only have 2!) and it will *supposedly* be able to see my
newer Western Digital (WD) 160gb hard disk drive.

Well, the add on card *DOES* see my new hard disk, and all is well. Kinda,
sorta. I finally ran scandisk and it finished, and yeah --- lo and
behold --- I had some major issues with the pointers in my partition
suggesting I had so much disk space when in reality I had much, MUCH less.
[As the OS, due to some hard rebooting and such, was kahflooey]

[As an adjunct, the LED that lit when my hard disk was directly connected to
my motherboard did not go on before, but now, it does. Which is/was weird]

Recently acquired a copy of Powerquest's Partition Magic, a software (I'm a
VAR, you see) that I know will help me. Here's the questions:

1) Will Partition magic work, the way it's supposed to, without the UltraTX
card?
1) a) you know, effectively run Scan Disk, Defrag and such.

yy-I know that WindowsME will not be able to recognize anything larger than
125GB due to it's make up. That's OK. I'm going to create a 2nd, usable
partition using Partition Magic v 8.x

But, perhaps, more importantly:

2) Will this add on, 3rd party, utility work they way I want it to in the
first place?

Any questions, please feel free to email the poster (in header) or post
here.

And sorry, for cross posting, but I think this might need to go in more than
one place.

Signed,

Mr. Curious

The first thing you should do is check with the drive manufacturer, they
have software that will help you set the drive up.

Hi Jerry.

As I have the hardware, I'd prefer that over software. Makes more sense.

And yes, there are many *overlays* that you can find that will work in this
manner. (supposedly)

Enjoy the big game. I hope my team wins!

New Enland won, as I expected.

You're missing the point. The drive manufacturer's have software that should
allow you to resolve your issues.

For instance, my 120Gb drive was not recognized correctly by my motherboartd
until I ran WD's DataLifeguard program. Same thing could apply to your
situation and help you get things together.
