As I recall, with earlier versions of Windows (3.1, W4WG) it was possible to
selectively reinstall individual files. Is this possible with ME?

Yes. See MS KB129605 - "HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows
Files" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=129605) and for those files
protected by Win Me's System File Protection (SFP) mechanism see MS KB
265371 - "How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows Me"
However don't forget system restore which might help you in allowing you
to roll your system back to a checkpoint created before any problems
started, provide, of course, that hat was not more than a few days or
perhaps a week ago.
