View Full Version : ¿¿¿AVG 7 update problem???

Is anyone else experiencing an updating problem with AVG 7 ? For the last
few days when trying to update AVG from the check for updates> internet
button, I get "Internet connection has failed. Please check your internet
connection settings". The only way to get the updates is to download the
update files onto my hard drive, and to point AVG to these downloaded files.
I've been searching for someway of contacting Grisoft but I'm not entitled,
being a free user. The Grisoft forums >>

server congestion, but some people are having the same problem for weeks,
now. Can someone shed some light on this situation?

My 'guess' is that you have their Free version. If you look at their WEB
page, there is an interesting note in their 'Buy AVG' box.

"Are you interested in 24/7 technical support
***and guaranteed faster downloads?***
Buy AVG Professional - two year subscription ....

Maybe that could explain things <g>

Thanks for all replies. It seems that the problem started after upgrading to
version 7. Narrow bandwidth, less servers available, who knows it might even
be a marketing strategy to make people convert to the paid version. Thanks,

If I'm not mistaken, AVG free and pro share 'some' of the same servers.
I don't run it *currently* but I'm sure that's the case.
Just server traffic - as is the case with many update servers, wait until there's
less congestion to update without any issues. :-)

Had trouble with my daughters machine until this morning then it updated
without a problem so I'm putting it down to server overload <g>

Thank again for your responses. I finally got through just a little while
ago after two weeks and many tries. I hope it won't be like this on the next
update. Fingers Crossed...

Yes, I've been having the problem. Version 6 also did for about a month last
year. Notably it is just the updates that seem to suffer this congestion.
You can manually download them easily enough from here:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php

I'm guessing that's what Silj's link points you at anyway?

George, "server overload" or not, the problem certainly appears to be at
'their end' <g> We are all suffering from it (at least with the Free
version?)

Just be patient, no doubt it will eventually clear up. I'm sure that Grisoft
must be aware of it. (Now there's confidence!)

Mart I know there are a lot of people in a.c.v and a.c.a.v reporting
problems but I just know with Kelly's ME system it only had problems for
a couple of days then updated OK.

Hi Joan, it seems fairly temperamental here (on broadband too) Some days,
'almost' instant - other days, hours. Sometimes, it just times out - others,
it offers a download - then back around the previous route and I'm sure you
can guess the rest. But e v e n t u a l l y it will complete. No big deal
(yet!) as it's at worst, only a couple of days 'out of date'. And, for a
freebee, its advantages by far outweigh these minor download delays. But I'm
not on dial-up of course <g>

Me, I'm just about sick of it. If a program update isn't critical it's
unnecessary. If it is critical, two days is too long.

Point taken Shane, but being a born optimistic cheapskate <g> I'm just
patiently waiting for Grisoft to fix it. I don't know if it also happens
with the Pro version, but if it does, then I would be very surprised if it
isn't fixed soon <bg> The expression 'voting with your wallet' springs to
mind.

The only machine that has it installed is Kelly's ME box and it has only
been quite recent that just the one time it wouldn't download for a
couple of days. I'm also on broadband now with the 3 machines here
networked with a wireless router, all running different AV's, John has
XPSP2 with eTrust and I have XPSP2 with NOD32.

Hi Joan, yet another 'fail' earlier this morning (server couldn't connect -
or similar wording) Then about an hour or so later I tried again very
sluggish response eventually offered 'today's' update - again very slow to
respond - but when it did, it d/led a few hundred Kb in a few seconds and
completed normally.

It seems to 'take its time' establishing the download - but when it does,
then it behaves normally. This is a typical daily behaviour now here.

As I said earlier, I can live with that, as it's free, but I'd be somewhat
concerned if I was paying for the Pro version. There certainly seem to be
issues at "their end". Then again, it *may* be OK with the Pro version <g>

I see what you mean, just been to try Kelly's. Connected brought up the
box to say what it would be installing I clicked OK, nothing then it
said closing connection, waited received answer and wooooooooosh updated
and installed no problem <g>
At least with her connection it is behind a router firewall plus ZA so
for now no worries as such.

From their website....

These are some of the great additional features that you can get in the
Professional Edition:
Access to guaranteed high-speed servers for downloading updates and program
upgrades

Just an observation here - but has anyone else noticed the improvement in
the response speeds of 'updates' (for the Free version at least) over the
past couple of days?

Maybe Grisoft do listen <g>

Updating AVG 7.0 Free isn't that big a mystery. If it won't update right
from the program while you're online, just go to their webpage -
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php
scroll down and decide which of the two Differential updates you can use.
Save it to your hard drive in a folder you can identify. Open AVG, go to
Control Center - Update Manager - Properties. Remove the checkmark next to
"Do not ask for the update source" and then Apply and OK Click on Check for
Updates and when prompted, choose Folder instead of Internet - point the way
to the folder that has the file and away it goes.

Works every time.

Bobbie
