If you are all feeling so bored how about some wild guesses as to what
could be wrong in my system here.
I would appreciate any help at all as things are getting impossible

Not Joan, but Mart

Two things Paulo! - As you 'appear' to have been quite methodical in
introducing software packages, can you think of which was the last one ("a
couple of days ago") BEFORE the system went "sluggish". Might be worth a
System Restore and roll back to that point UNLESS you installed quite a bit
since then. (N.B. - if you do try SR, then you will probably have to
re-install your 'later' packages.)

Also, as you 'appear' to suggest that you think the problem is 'sound card
related' - i.e. that .WAV files cause the problem - you should consider
'Removing' and re-installing your Sound Card drivers. - But do this in
Device Manager in SAFE MODE.

Thank you, Mart
I'll try your suggestion about sound card drivers.
The SR solution is on as I really can't remember WHEN it started and
what I had installed just before.
It ("the problem") was something that went creeping up on me slowly.
Certainly the sound card drivers is worth a shot.
Now where did I get those drivers from?
Cos I remember that the drivers on the Motherboard CD-ROM (on-board
sound) didn't work - no MP3 sound.
And HOW am I going to UNinstall them?
This is going to take a bit of working out.
I'll post a message to you when I've tried out this sound card thingy.

Thanks for your suggestion

Have one on me - whatever you fancy ;-)

Cheers

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Sound &Multimedia devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers,
hopefully curing your problem.

Thanks very much, Noel!

Just a question:
Won't this JUST remove the device entries from Device Manager?
When I restart in normal mode won't he (or is Windows a "she"?) just
reinstall the same driver programs?
Or is this what you are suggesting?
And, if so, how will this make a difference?
Stupid question?
Well, one can but ask ... even stupid questions!

Thanks anyway for the step-by-step
Much Appreciated

would suggest Uninstalling any software (if any) that was bundled with
your sound system.

a "bitch" occasionally to be sure, but "it" seems proper.

That's the point; something seems to have kicked over your sound system
cart. Re-installing drivers may be an easy way to right it.

If it doesn't work, take a closer look at stuff, I'd suggest opening
TaskManager <Ctrl-Alt-Del> and start kicking stuff out until you get
your sound back (umm... you can leave explorer and systray alone); next
have you recently installed a multimedia player of some sort.

Rick
bets on either Creative trying to take over the world or something weird
trying to play .wavs

Of course! IT! My apologies - a slip of the English tongue.

I'll try the 3 finger kick out you suggest.
DIVX 502 bundle?

Well, it's me that's trying to play the WAVs, and I'm not THAT normal,
but weird....? ;-)

Something? - A whole cart-full of devices in the sound section of
device manager that have no right to be there!

"BDA"-this, "BDA"-that, "Microsoft"-this, "Microsoft"-that - around 15
devices THAT WERE NOT THERE AFTER THE FRESH INSTALL!

Suspect: DivX Bundle 502

I removed EVERYTHING from the sound section - including the C-Media
devices for the on-board sound and let Windows sort itself out on
reboot.
Now I'm back with just the 4 devices that I had before...

....and, guess what?!...

.... the problem has disappeared!

Many thanks to all concerned for the help!

Valeu, bicho! (It was worthwhile, man)

Ta-ta for now (until the next problem ;-)

Yours thankfully
