Go to Start/Shutdown/Restart and while the computer is restarting
(rebooting), hold down the Ctrl (or F8) key and you should eventually get a
white & black screen with 4 choices.......pick #3....Safe Mode.

When you have scandisked and defragged, then reboot normally and it will now
come back up in normal Windows Mode (your icons may be scattered....move
them back into place).

Post back if you need any more information.

With regard to the icons being scattered, a handy little free app called
Iconoid will put them all right back where you had them. www.sillysot.com .
It does other things, as well, like allowing you to change the color of the
icon text and more.
If you are using Auto Hide for the Task Bar, you will have to 'recheck' that
after coming out of Safe Mode, as well.
Heirloom, old and just did it

By George, I'm going to have to try this little app. I've been trying to
use Cursorarts ActivIcons program, which is good for some things, but I've
never been really successful in getting it to restore all my desktop icons
after they're scrambled by Safe Mode. Thanks for the lead.
