scandisk & defrag

I have Win. ME. I can't get the scandisk & defrag to run. Keeps starting and
stopping. Can anyone tell me what to do?

Do both in Safe Mode........

Go to Start/Shutdown/Restart and while the computer is restarting
(rebooting), hold down the Ctrl (or F8) key and you should eventually get a
white & black screen with 4 choices.......pick #3....Safe Mode.

When you have scandisked and defragged, then reboot normally and it will now
come back up in normal Windows Mode (your icons may be scattered....move
them back into place).

Post back if you need any more information.

Try running both these in safe mode.
or end-task on all the ctrl-alt-del menu background programs; close all the
progs with icons in your task bar (except possibly virus scanner - although
this might be the cause of the problem if it is keeping tabs on your system
in the background.

Temporarily disable it and your firewall and all other progs except
systray/explorer then try running defrag/scandisk again.
