Gradually the performance of these two utilities deminished to the point
that they don't even seem to finish.
What can be done about it?

Harry.

How much freespace do you have on your HD, Harry? Also, do the utilities
function properly in the Safe Mode??
Heirloom, old and could make a difference

17.75 GB's on a 20 GB drive, that's plenty, Heirloom.
But I didn't run in Safe Mode yet.
As soon as I figured out how to go about it, I'll let you know.

Harry, old and helpful to accomplish that.

3.5% freespace ain't much, Harry..........not with all the swapping around
that has to be done. I could be mistaken, but, this may be a part of your
'slowdown.'
"As soon as you figured out how to go about it?"..........are you
questioning how to get into Safe Mode?....or how to run the utilities from
Safe Mode??
Heirloom, old and semi-confused

Heirloom:

Except for a brief interruption at about 90% completion of defrag
everything went smoothly in 'Safe mode'.
When defrag was near the end, it found a lot of files which belonged
at the beginning of the drive and they were transported there.
Asssumingly this was my problem, besides some sticking points in startup?
Maybe there's more?

Harry.

Heirloom,
I am going to try and de-confuse you:
17.75% is the free space and only 2.25%+ occupied..
And where Safe mode is concerned, I managed allright.
Hoping now that everything is back to normal.

Harry.

Your original post re: freespace faked me out........I was under the
impression you had 17.75G occupied out of the 20G. Freespace is not a prob.
Are you using the Windows defragger or an aftermarket app? Some defrag apps
are a lot more efficient than others at moving files around. I use
Diskeeper 8, which, I believe, is made by the same folks that made the
defragger for XP.

As far as your "sticking points in startup"......you need to be a little
more specific before suggestions can be made, with the exception of
referring you to the following sites:
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html
http://ww2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
http://www.greatis.com/regrun3appdatabase.htm
Note: I haven't used any of the above sites in a while, but, they should
still be good links. Check a number of them, they will tell you what is
NEEDED at startup and what is simple 'fluff' or bad stuff.
Heirloom, old and hope that helps

Heirloom:

Startup is bypassed in Safe mode, am I correct? That's the reason for my
remark about "sticking points", because it must have caused the problem with
defrag. Thanks for the links and the tip for Diskeeper 8.
Once I get through with that, I'll let you know the results.

Harry.

Safe Mode will bypass items in the Start Up axis, loading only the necessary
drivers and such for Windows, hence, an excellent troubleshooting step. The
sites I listed will assist you in narrowing down your 'slowdown' issue if it
is a result of a running process.
Don't take my use of Diskeeper 8 as a tip, it just happens to be what I use.
Since moving to EZ AV from eTrust, I am unable to run this defragger
normally. I have to execute it manually with the AV in the snooze mode or
it will hang. The app put out by the late Koldbear and associates,
ScanDefrag, has had a lot of success, however, I could not get it to work on
my machine. There are a number of good defraggers on the market, in fact, I
am not aware of major drawbacks to the Windows Me defragger.....other than
being slower and that may be entirely due to using the Applog for
arrangement of files.
Heirloom, old and need to get ready

It's doing fine and has a nice new home in a pretty little church in west
Texas, thank you, Harry.

As for you, Figgs, that was a very "cross" thing to say, hex, hex, hex.
Jeor;pp,, old and that's what happens when
your right hand isn't on the home keys.

She is 20............inches in the inseam. That 'youthful' look is a direct

Come on down to Tyler during the last eight days of Feb, Figgs, and bring
Joan, and you can straighten this out, face to face.
Befoe we're finished, Loon will be ten pounds lighter. And Ch... will be
very happy, even if still short.

I''ll bring a tux for the "operation", so there will be at least one
"penguin" witness.
