View Full Version : Blank Desktop

While using my computer yesterday I had some errors come
up saying some programs were shuting down (not sure what
they were). Then I had the blue screen of death followed
by my desktop going blank. Cntrl alt del revealed that no
programs were running (none), shutting the computer down
and restating did not help, blank desktop. I started in
safe mode but got a blank desktop. Any ideas as to what
went wrong and how to fix it?

It would appear that Windows is not fully loading.
A virus infection is quite possible.

Use another machine and obtain the floppy-bootable AV tool, F-Prot.
Create the bootable floppy with a new signature file and examine your
suspect machine.

""Fortunately System Restore can often be run from a command prompt when you
cannot start Win Me or even boot into Safe Mode.. What is involved is
booting to DOS using a floppy and editing C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI such that
the
line shell=explorer.exe reads instead shell=progman.exe. After removing the
floppy see if you can boot the PC so that Program Manager is launched after
which you may be able to run System Restore. For full details see MS KB
279736 - "How to Start the System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt"

I concur with heirloom.
The F-Prot site has all the details.

Question: Would a SCANREG /RESTORE be worth a shot in this case?...before
going to all the trouble of reinstalling?

It could also be caused by a "broken" Internet Explorer. The user might
be able to launch the repair tool from a command prompt boot.

From the Command Prompt navigate to the Windows directory C:\Windows>
(or whereever Windows is installed on your pc) then enter this command:
control.exe appwiz.cpl That should open Add/Remove Programs. Double
click Internet Explorer and chose "Repair".
