View Full Version : DOS Mode out.

I cannot run anything in DOS Mode on my PC.
How can I activate it?
Whenever I want to boot with A:\ I am unable to, even though I tried making
Floppy the first boot device in the BIOS.
What is missing?

Harry.

So you put the WinMe Startup Disk in the A: drive and switch-on your
machine. What happens next Harry?

Boots straight into WinMe?
A: drive runs? (light comes on?)
Boots to the A:\> prompt, but you can't do anything then?
Blank Screen?
Error Reports?
Can you access (i.e read & write to) your A: drive OK in WinMe?

Mart

Mike:

It boots into WinME and I can access the A drive allright.
I also have access to the MS DOS Prompt, but cannot run DOS in Real Mode. It
simply isn't there. I found this out when trying to run Simmtester.

My first boot device in BIOS is HDDO, the second CDROM and the third
is Floppy. I used to have Floppy or CDROM as first, but always got this
message at boot-up and was able to fix it by placing HDDO first.

None of the other items you mentioned apply.
Aside of the missing DOS everything is perfect.

This is puzzling to me.

Harry.

Mike:

Through a google search I just discovered that Real-mode DOS has been hidden
in mWinME and can be restored in my particular latest version.
I have detailed instructions already printed out to accomplish this.

Should have done the search in the first place, Mike.

Thank you for being there.

Harry.

Harry - It's Mart, by the way, not Mike <g>

Firstly, ALL the list of items are important - so important, that in spite
of not answering them, I guessed the cause of your problem - which you have
confirmed in your second reply.

Secondly, DON'T go down this route !!!
> ....and can be restored in my particular latest version.
> I have detailed instructions already printed out to accomplish this.

THAT IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM!!! - DO NOT GO THERE!!!

Your problem is that you MUST set the BIOS to reconise the A: drive *first*

You must make the first boot device the Floppy
and the second HDD0 etc.

Of course, Mart, I am sorry and my apologies to Mike also.

When I have Floppy as first boot device, I get this message at boot-up:
"Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: Failure" and then finishing regular startup.

The last time I had my PC worked on by a technician, he installed the
present 20Gb drive and I installed Windows ME myself (he had offered to do
it) and when I got these messages (see above), he suggested putting HDDO
first.
That worked for me and I was satisfied, until now.

And now what, Mart?

Harry.

Then I can only ASSume that you had the sequence set as :-

A:, CD-ROM:, HDD0:

And so you need to set it as :-

A:, HDD0, CD-ROM:

The idea being that the boot-up first looks for a 'bootable floppy'. If it
doesn't see one, then it looks for a 'bootable master HDD' (0) - (NB.
slave - if fitted - would become HDD1. If the (master) HDD is 'faulty' or
the boot sector damaged, then it will look for the third device, the CD-ROM.
Then if, and only if - the CD-ROM has a bootable CD inserted, will it boot
from the CD-ROM.

If you set the boot order differently - as you had done - then you will get
the appropriate error reports. You should now be able to understand why you
got your error report when you tried to boot from the CD-ROM first and I
ASSume that it would continue to boot from the HDD once you acknowledged the
"Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: Failure" report.

Mart:

I fully understand now what the sequence should be.
All I had to do was move the Floppy from 3rd to 1st and bingo,
problem solved. Already ran the Simmtest and passed with flying colors.
Good thing this post with Simmtester came along. Before I couldn't even have
utilized my startup disk if necessary. And the best part is, I had no idea.

Thanks very much for your help, Mart.
