View Full Version : Boot problems

DAISY

Hi,
Puter boots in safe mode. I can reboot and sometimes it will boot ok, but
sometimes it will take several attempt. I've reformatted my hard drive and
have only installed the basics. Still have the problem. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Daisy

Are you sure that it really is in Safe Mode? It *may* just be the wrong
screen resolution.

Does it say 'Safe Mode' in each corner of the display?

If you are sure that it really is in Safe Mode, what happens when you
shut-down and re-boot?

Does it automatically run Scandisk?
Does it then attempt to start in Normal Mode?

Have you got the 'Enable Startup Menu' box set in msconfig?
Run msconfig.exe and on the General tab, select Advanced and uncheck the
'Enable Startup Menu' box.

Yes, it says safe mode in each corner.

Sometimes it reboots ok.......sometimes not.

It auto runs scandisk. And then starts in normal mode usually.

NO, enable startup isn't checked but enable deep sleep is.
What's next?

OK Daisy, thanks for that.

> Sometimes it reboots ok.......sometimes not.

So when 'not' - what happens?

Any error reports? Blank Black (or Blue or White) screen? Odd noises from
the PC box itself e.g. 'beeps'?
Do you see the DOS 'Post' screen (indicating various parameters of you PC's
hardware)?
Do you see the WinMe 'splash' screen?
Do you get as far as the Desktop?

At which point in the above sequence does it stop booting/re-booting into
Normal Mode and what steps do you take to proceed (Reset button, Power-off
switch, Ctrl+Alt+Del)?

(Bed time here in the UK, so unless someone else can pick it up, I'll
continue in the morning)

Last night every time I did a restart or rebooted it booted fine.

This morning first boot of the day booted to safe mode! I watched it all
very carefully........
Gateway splash screen but it was very faint and I don't think it completed
the green line under the logo before the Win ME splash appeared.
Next the usual black screen with the flashing_in the left top,
back to Gateway splash, Win ME splash and then safe mode.

I shut it down normally. Rebooted w/this sequence:
Gateway splash
ME splash
Black screen with the flashing _ in the upper left corner
Blue screen
Ran scandisk automatically
Network log on screen
Finished boot and here I am! Nothing unusal about it.
No errors, no nothing odd to report.
I'm running Avast anti-virus and Zone alarm.
Any ideas?
Is it time to take it to the shop?

Shutting down now, time for church, be back later.

I'm back from church! Booted in safe mode again.
but this time had a Win ME splash first. Then Gateway splash
Win Me Splash
Safe mode
Shut down
Reboot:
Gateway splash
Win ME splash
Black screen
Blue screen
Scandisk ran
Network log on
And I'm back on line again.
I have PC Doctor but don't know what to do with it. The help and support
pages that appear when it boots in safe mode wasn't any help.

One suggestion, if nothing else helps, try booting the machine then press F8 for
the startup menu, then select the option "Logged Startup" (or similar), then
which ever mode it eventually boots to, review the boot log (C:\bootlog.txt I
think (?)).

If it has any unusual errors they will be in that file.

Sorry for the delay in returning Daisy.

OK, from your very helpful notes, it appears that after a 'Normal' session,
then sometimes, the next (Warm or Cold?) boot puts you into 'Safe Mode'.

If that is correct, then the problem can often be caused by an incorrect
shutdown - Yes! Shutdown!!

Take a look at Jim Eshelman's excellent troubleshooting site. The following
two URL's link directly to articles on WinME shutdown problems:

Thanks so much. Had the puter in the shop since Monday...........and guess
what???? They couldn't fix it. Tried several things but nothing helped.
Said maybe the mother board............but I told them to leave it alone!!!!
Good news is...........they didn't charge me anything!
Will reread all the info on these sites and see what I can do! Might take
me a while but will let you know if any of it helped or not.
Thanks,
