View Full Version : Cannot Un-Check "Mute All" Checkbox in sound properties........

January 7th 05, 11:18 PM
I posted this earlier in this ng with no reply, I'm hoping someone can
help me out here. The original post was:

In the volume control dialog box(es) in Windows ME, I cannot un-check
the "Mute All" checkbox, the speaker icon in the taskbar is red-slashed
out, and there is no sound.

All appears okay in Task Mangler, yet there is no sound. This has
happened before, and I fixed it by running system restore, but I would
like to find out if there is a better, more specific fix I could try.

Any ideas, anyone? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, all...

Chances are that the soundcard drivers have become corrupted and need
re-installing.

Boot into Safe Mode (Press and hold the Shift key from a COLD boot - i.e a
power switch-on) Cancel the Help Centre.
Right-Click the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties and
choose Device Manager.

Look for ALL occurrences of Sound Cards (including games controllers) and
'Remove' them all in Device Manager.

Shut down and re-boot (cold boot) your computer into Normal Mode (boot
normally) and WinMe should re-detect your sound card and attempt to install
the correct drivers - You *may* have a separate disk or CD supplied with
your computer containing the sound drivers for your particular model. If so,
you'll have to use that disk when asked.

N.B Ensure that you have the latest WinMe drivers for your card - check the
card manufactures web site and download them if necessary - direct the setup
wizard to the location of the 'new drivers'

All being well you should have your sound back again. If not come back and
somebody will try to help you further.

Thanks for your reply.......my sound is integral to the mainboard, but
I will do as you suggested.

thanks again!

the same advice applies - just go to the motherboard manufacturer's website
for the latest driver versions instead.

Thanks for the reply, Noel. I still can't help but suspect that some
file is corrupted in my pc's WinMe operating system, since the sound
problem is intermittent. The pc will boot up with sound intact
sometimes, and other times the Mute All checkbox cannot be unchecked,
as I described before.

Any further comments??

Thanks again!

Mark

Yes - why don't you apply the advice you've a;ready been given, and see
whether that helps?

Hokay, will do......just was hoping for a magic answer where I would
not have to fix anything.....just lazy I guess....lol

Thanks again.

Well, did what you suggested....removed sound driver and re-installed,
athough I did not check for a driver update.

Sound has been booting up just fine since then, and will continue to
watch what happens.

Thanks again, Noel......
