View Full Version : HP Scanner Problems

Hi Guys.....
I cannot get this dam thing to work.....I get 5 errors......but 2 of them
repeat themselves. I get 2 HPGIH.DLL and 2 KERNEL32.DLL ones. I have
looked in Device Manager, but it seems to be OK......I am hopeless when it
comes to scanners. They are so durned touchy!!
I have just installed a USB thingie (Hub?) with 4 ports, so changed it over
to that, but no dice.
It scans OK, but when I try to send it to a program or printer or file, I
get the same errors.
This happened a few weeks ago but it was working fine before that. The only
thing I can think of that is new is Firefox......but that shouldn't do it.
Errors follow......Heather
(not going to set up the new printer tonight....but about ready to throw
this damn HP scanjet out the window, grin).

Time for WinXP Figgs.
{ What was that about stability ? :-) }
This sounds like a DLL mis-matched problem causing the HP DLLs and KERNEL32.DLL to crash.

Gee.....thanks Dave.......whatever in heck that means. (G)
I will be putting XP on here in the very near future, but it ticks me off
that this scanner is doing this. I have used this without problems for some
2 years.....so would like to figure out why I got all of these errors.
I did get it to work ONCE.....but the damn invoice came out backwards, grin.
And I am not sure how I managed to get it to work. Pure fluke I guess.
Perhaps I will reinstall the software first.
Sigh......Heather.

Hi Heather, have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the "dam thing" <g>
Can't do any harm!
As David said elsewhere, sounds like a DLL mismatch - BUT - as you said, it
did work fine up to a few weeks ago, so you're in with a good chance.
BTW - It *might* be worth looking on the HP site to see if they offer an
Un-installer Utility which can sometimes remove parts that other installers
don't reach.

Thanks Mart.......I will go have supper and then tackle it later. I will
check their site.......I had to get new drivers and a big update via CD from
them a couple of years ago. This came out of the blue. Elayne used it a
lot a year ago, working on family pictures....and it worked for me up till
about a month ago at a guess.
I will try to find both sets of drivers I guess.....or do I just need that
newer CD one. Who knows. I found a scanner ng and one guy suggested that
HP scanners made good "door stops"......LOL!!
Cheers....Heather

Hi Mart......
Well, here it is almost 11:30 and I have uninstalled/reinstalled and it
seems to have worked. Bloody PITA tho. Nothing on their website re a
removal tool, but while I haven't run RegClean, I deleted all that was left
in Windows Update (which was a lot).
After I did the Scanner proggie, I then decided to uninstall/reinstall Adobe
ActiveShare.....and that is done too. I don't believe in making it easy
(G).
Copied my rebate slip for the printer.....and of course I had removed my old
Canon BJC inkjet thinking I would put it on after zipping thru this
mess...nah. That is for tomorrow.
Thanks.....that seems to have done the trick. I only used the newer CD that
HP sent me, which installed it all. Have no clue as to what caused the
problem, but keep your fingers crossed and have a Guiness on me!!
Cheers.....Heather
PS.....I think the computer world should all revolt......on durned mail-in
REBATES!!!!!!
I usually refuse to buy anything with mail-in rebates, but this one was for
$40 and then another $20 to spend on what I like....which brought the
printer down to a ridiculous price. Epson Stylus Photo R200. I figure I
should print out a picture or two of Noel and paste them on here....grin.

Well done Heather, good to hear that it's working again.
> Have no clue as to what caused the problem,
Err.. we are talking 'computers' here !!
Don't worry if HP don't have a 'Utility', it's just that my Canon scanner
(not an all-in-one) has a 'Removal Utility' which 'appears' to clean things
out, including registry references (at least all that I could find!)
BTW - Bearing in mind that I have very high regards for WinMe, I
(reluctantly) do tend to concur with David's comment :- "Time for WinXP
Figgs." <bg>
Oh!.... and Cheers Heather, that Guiness will be downed tonight - AND ..
it's Mrs Mart's B'day too!!

What do you think of Firefox Heather, last night I downloaded Firefox and
Thunderbird but haven't done anything yet.
One of my computer shop guys had to come out yesterday to sort out the ram
sticks in John's machine and he said I should get it he thought I would
like it.

I like it Joanie.....it is faster and doesn't attract the nasty stuff. It
comes 'plain out of the box' and you add the extensions and things you want.
I had a problem with the beta one in that my bookmarks/favourites, while
making the transition, would not go into alphabetical order the way I wanted
them. With the official version 1.0, they did.
The last couple of patches/updates for ME were of a 50/50 variety and I
elected not to download them. Seems Billy wants us all to go to XP, grin.
I think one of my favourite, but simple, things is that it only keeps
addresses in the URL part if you use them regularly....it cleans them out.
Nice!! In IE, I am forever typing in urls for Ron looking for some obscure
TR car parts and they just stay there until I erase them all, which means I
lose my everyday ones.
Write me if you want help, but TomV on here helped me out a lot. So just
yell.

Most Importantly.....wish Mrs. Mart a happy birthday......same day as the
Loon?? Ack!! Nah....there can't be two like him. (VBG)
Once I back up my mp3's (no mean feat.....) I will put XP on here......with
help from you guys.
Btw....I meant I went to Windows Explorer (not Update) to remove all the
durned folders.....I was tired, lol.
But also a word to anyone else if they have the Adobe ActiveShare program
with their scanner.......removing it wiped out the Acrobat 5 reader, so
reinstalled that. I found that out by running RegClean and it had 10 kb. of
registry stuff for Acrobat that was removed.
Glad I didn't attempt the above before supper......I would have starved!!

I will.....I will......I promise. Just some backing up to do, then the big
decision as to which of 3 ways to go.....and I am putting it on.
1. Additional Hard Drive?
2. Dual Boot?
3. Straight layover and no more ME.

Heather, you ought to upgrade to version 6 (.0.2) ASAP
It's far superior and has even got a "Read out loud" voice reader built-in.
(Not sure if that only works with XP though)

I think that is the case......I remember Mike M. stating that he preferred
version 5 for some reason or other. I had 3 on here, so updated to that
one. Once I get XP on here, I will "go to town" with my proggies, grin.

I'll yell if I need you <g> did you go with Thunderbird as well or just
Firefox.
Not sure yet whether I will move over as I have never had any problems
with IE or OE yet (say's she with tongue in cheek) <g> the only problem
was when I went to XP my copy of OEQuote Fix didn't work anymore and I
really liked that prog. went to get it again because it said could be used
with XP but must have got a corrupt download as it wouldn't install :-(
so haven't tried again since.

No probs with it here Noel - far from it. In fact it there are other
built-in utils which I certainly don't ever remember seeing in v5 - e.g Save
As Text.
I use it plenty - and it's NEVER given me any problems.
Task Manager doesn't show any more (or less) than Word.

I think I *get* what you are blandly stating.....grin. Version 3 was quite
good enough for what I use it for......and I did see Mike say version 5 was
the best for WinME. Besides.....doesn't it say on their website not to use
6 for WinME?? Or is that any of a myriad of others that say that.
Now....if I can get this ******ing (insert word of choice) Epson Photo
printer to work, I will be happy. As usual, tech support at the store was
NOT helpful. "Just uninstall & reinstall the opposite of how the printed
directions say to do it.....if not, bring it back in and we will TRY to find
you another one".......aarrgghh!!!! It keeps telling me the ink cartridges
are empty. NOT!!
I hate computers and hardware and so on at the moment!!!!! Going to go and
have a CC & pepsi and snarl at Ron.....grin. Poor man.....he hides out when
I am doing this stuff. Put the USB Hub on OK.....fixed the scanner
OK.....now this stupid thing is giving me grief. Techie said the newer
printers could be 'touchy'.....and asked if the box was factory
sealed....no, it wasn't. Shoot.....time for that CC.

Just Firefox......and it has decided to be my default browser.....so watch
what you tick off. I use IE when I choose to though. Not really interested
in using Thunderbird.....but know nothing about it.
You might as well have downloaded the whole Mozilla prog.....rather than in
two parts.
There are extensions you can add to Firefox for those websites that are only
readable with IE......or just use IE. Haven't run into more than one or two
so far.
PS...I hated "quote-fix".....think I deleted it off of this computer.
Speaking of OE and good proggies, get Majik's OE backup (freebie) and back
up your email and addresses, etc. It is on Tomsterdam's site.....he and
*little Stevie Wonder* wrote it.
Cheers.....Heather

Noel, you've got me intrigued. What utility are you using to measure
resource and memory with?
I'm using TaskMan in XP and cannot see any excessive drain even with a 260
page document. Certainly very little more than a 1 page Word document!!
Are you sure that you hadn't got a rogue 'plug-in' loaded?

I'm running AR6 in XP here - (Athlon2200+, 1GB ) and it takes anything up to
5 seconds just to load the app clean (first time per boot) - doing it from
an IE window takes even longer.
The app insists on loading a bunch of other irrelevant stuff in the
background as well (including WISPTIS) - none of which is unloaded when you
shut the app down (AcroRd32 is still present, as well until you kill it or
reboot). This is either lazy/bad programming, or an attempt to hide their
problems.
Yes, it's possible to streamline the load using third-party add-ons - but it
shouldn't be necessary to do so!

5 seconds - 10 seconds! So what? It almost gives me a chance for another
sip of my coffee. All versions have taken an age to open - and several other
apps. too. So that imperceptible timing difference is not an issue with me.
And turning the 'Splash' off, can improve it by a few microseconds anyway
<g>.
'Slow' opening it thru' IE seems to be more dependant on the download speed
of the pages to be viewed - AR6 is there, open and waiting to be populated.
The WISPTIS issue *may* be a lazy/bad bit of programming or the result of a
little 'pressure' from MS perhaps? (BTW - I notice AR6 is now at v6.0.3 and
WISPTIS is still there and doesn't close down. However AcroRd32 certainly
does (and did) close down here.)
May be a case of WFM <g> and in my opinion, the 'improvements' certainly
outweigh those 'disadvantages'.
I'm sticking with v6

AFAICT there are no significant improvements from v5 to v6 - the only reason
I keep v6 here is because of a single PDF file!

Heyyy....on this turning off the splash screen, how do you do that? I have
AR6 and it does take forrrreeeevvvveeerrr for it to open on my ME and W2K
both. I don't only have time to sip my coffee....I have time to grow the
dang beans first! ;o)

Hi Jan, HNY to you too!!
> Heyyy....on this turning off the splash screen, how do you do that?
Edit \ Preferences | Startup - Application Startup section - uncheck the
"Display Splash screen" box. There's a whole palate of toys there to play
with <g>
FWIW - Against all recommendations? - I had to replace the 3 yr old HDD on
my XP box over the xmas period, consequently a complete re-install of
everything (Very long story/saga as to why I had to take that route, rather
than 'simply' image it), However, the difference/increase in speed has been
incredible.
Some members of this community vehemently argue against the need for a clean
install every couple of years or so, arguing it being unnecessary. A view
which I have never had any particularly strong feelings about either way,
but have generally abided by.
Well, throughout those three years, I believe that I have generally kept a
fairly tidy ship, but after having loaded the new disk to a very similar
capacity (and applications) as was in use by my original disk, then this
has - in my opinion - put paid to that theory. OK, a lot of hard (time
consuming) work - but well worth the effort. Just hope I haven't started the
great debate again <bg>
So *maybe*, that's why AR6 (and most everything else, at the moment!!) is
running sweetly on my box - just a thought.

Mercy!! That was quite an adventure over the holidays! But, I can
understand your theory. I wanted to add W2k to my machine, which I got as a
birthday present in October last year. I had been thinking of it for some
time, as some of the programs I need to make my butter and egg money
will/are no longer support/ing ME. Thus, any new updates or versions will
require either W2k or XP. While my ME hard drive would be large enough to
support both programs with partitioning, which I had planned to do some time
ago and then things didn't work out, so I set it aside. Then I decided to
get a new hard drive instead, but, I was pending a move from San Diego, CA
to Northern Virginia, clear across country to the other coast, so I put it
off again. So...when I got the W2k for my birthday in October last year
after the move, along with a new 80G hard drive.....there was no holding me
back.
Then...in November, another birthday present arrived from a very dear
friend, Windows XP with SP2. Ohhh!! Can you imagine the delight!?!
Although, I was a bit reluctant for a while to dive into the deeper waters
and acutally install it, as I am still hardly able to even fasten my Mea
West wtih ME, and barely into the wading pool with W2K. However....duty
calls, and I now have it also loaded.
Now.... I can select my computer environ to suit my mood each day. i.e.;
If I'm not feeling especially challenged, I select ME, 'cause I know it
best, and it's more gentle with me;
When I feel somewhat saucy and pert, I select W2k, as it seems to stimulate
my sense of curious adventure;
When I'm feeling just down right bitchy, I select XP with "Go ahead...make
my day!!" and just double-dog dare it to pitch a fuss! (and no Noel...you
can not go there here......!!)
Life just don't get much better'n that..... ;o))

Now Mart....you know you are soooo good at debating....it's the others who
need more practice. I think it is most considerate of you to toss out a
fresh bone now and then for them to gnaw around on. Keeps them in good
shape..... (why is it I hear to the rush of an impending "swaaaat!!!" in the
air??) ;o))
>

Well....I have it and other than it takes too long for me to load, I have no
problems with it, although, I don't use it all that often. Hopefully,
changing the setting to rid it of the splash screen startup will help.
Thanks for the instructions. And put yer spurs on and hang tight. A thorn
by any other name....well....you know the rest.... ;o)

Jan, that is the understatement of the year <g> As I said, a very long
saga - also involving a dying PSU, and also adding several new goodies,
whilst the opportunity arose. But the real 'adventure' was the urgency in
trying to get replacement parts (especially a PSU) during the Christmas
period when the usual suppliers were on holiday. Withdrawal symptoms were
not an option! - Had enough cold turkey <g>
I must admit that it takes some doing to destroy XP. It "usually" bounces
back on a Re-Boot - unless it's 2 days before Christmas!! And fortunately,
I was able to recover my data and re-format (and reclaim) the 'original'
HDD. NTFS may be all very good until.... (I know what you mean, Mr Quirke).
Can't do very much with it in DOS.
In the meantime, I would doubt that turning-off the AR splash would gain you
very much 'extra' time - probably only fractions of a second. But I wonder
if you 'upgraded' rather than remove your previous version(s) and then clean
installed AR6? An option worth considering?

Gahhh! I can well image. I had turkey so may ways it was not funny...even
BBQ'd on the outdoor grill, in 34 degree weather! Ever eat BBQ'd left over
turkey? I can tell you right now there will never be a next! Didn't even
smell good....we won't even talk about the looks. I ate just a tiny piece
to be polite, then made my way to the relish table and ate green olives
stuffed with imitation crab meat and celery stuffed with Cheese Whiz. The
deviled eggs looked interesting..... unitl I ate one and found they were
made with sweet pickle relish and chopped Currents. Dang!! That is just
gawd awful stuff!! It'd plumb gag a maggot!

Heh...I' guess you'd say I've done my part to inflict systemly harm to XP.
Not on purpose mind you, but, well....some kids learn to roller skate with
clamp on skates without permanent scars around their ankles. I wasn't one
of 'em. Dang near lost both feet just getting from our front porch to the
driveway!

Well..actually, when I installed everything on the new hard drive I didn't
have AR. But, I ran into a project where I needed to read a series of
instructions and diagrams that were in AR, so I had to install it. So...you
might say it is a fresh install on a fairly new HDD. I have noticed that
it does load a LOT faster now without that prolonged splash screen. I can't
say I was ever curious enough to want to know the name of the author's first
dog. So, yeah, it is much faster now. I guess I'll find out if it slows up
when I have to do an upgrade it later on.

That's good to know, Jan. Although faster, it didn't make too much
difference here, but mine loads quite fast anyway.

Yeah....new toys are great.....ya just can't have enough though. ;o))
I truly love my all in one....sans a fax. I have an HP G55 color printer,
copier and scanner, and it works like a mule. I do a *lot* of color
scanning and printing in the work I do with PowerPoint and CorelDraw, and I
find that the ink carts are really reasonable, and I can get over 2500
prints out of each tri-color cart. which is only 59.00 USD. I can get them
for less on sale now and then, so I stock up. But, I'm looking into getting
me a fax soon too. With e-mail, I don't really need a fax that much, but,
at times, it does come in handy. Like now, I'm job hunting here in
Warrenton, and need to fax my Resume, as most companies now use that method
in their application process, and I have to use an outside source. Sort of
expensive, as well as inconvenient.
I'd say you have the printer install process whizzed at this point. :-)

I'm using a PSC1315 - again 'sans fax' - this thing just keeps on going
(which is good idea, considering the number of A4 full-colour prints I'm
doing ATM!!)
It always seems to be the fax part that b*llixes everything up - which is
why I went for a machine that doesn't have one.

The one I'm waiting for is the Epsom CX6600, we didn't bother in the
end going for one that had fax capabilities as long as it was a
standalone copier, printer, scanner and had a memory card slot.
If we need to send a fax I'll just go round to the friend I gave my fax
machine to <g>
I managed to get my HPColourLaserJet 1500L to share with John and it
works <g> so hopefully I will be OK with the new one. I didn't do any
sharing on Kelly's machine as she is quite happy with her setup as it is.

Yeah.....I am really glad that I didn't get one with the fax. It can only
screw up the rest as well. If you have one that is by itself, if it is goes
bonkers, then it's a lone duck, and everyhing else can still work fine. I
did find the scanner decided to cop a 'tude with W2K, but, we had a talk
about replacement.....parts being parts......so it decided to get off it's
high-horse and now runs like a top. :o)

I had to send a Resume for a job app. yesterday from a postal shop nearby,
and it cost me $3.00 USD! Daaang! I figured that at that rate, I could pay
for one in a very short time! I have a feeling that I will be using one a
lot more these days. I am going to start a small business of my own here as
well, doing custom graphic art work, PowerPoint projects, and Access
database .development projects on a wider scale, as the market here is much
more open. The fax will come in handy for a number of things now.

Jan,
XP has a fax client, W2K may as well, and there are a number of fax
clients including MSFax that can be installed on Win Me. Personally I
would only go for a stand alone fax if I expected to be receiving faxes
when I was not around to receive them on my PC. Like Noel I would also
avoid any combo printer/scanner that included a fax.
BTW the best of luck with your new venture.

Yes. I was not aware of that right off. Didn't think about it before, but,
now that I am thinking along that route, I'll be looking in to that. I'm
glad that I did not go the of the *all and fax*route at the time I bought
the one I have. It will be easier to replace and set up without the fax
stuff, and vice versa. I'll have to look into the clents in each one. I
liked the idea of being able to send multiple pages if need be.

Thank you! I'm looking into tutoring for Word, Access and PowerPoint
programs as well. Lots of folks around these parts are begging for help. :-)

Jan,
Once you've set up your fax client you can access it in various ways,
either via the console, or from within an application such as Word where
you can simply treat it as if it were a printer, outputting a multi-page
document with ease including being prompted as to whether you want to add
a cover page or not as suits your needs.
I just hope you find enough customers to keep the wolves at bay and that
you enjoy the new found freedom self-employment brings.
Cheers,

Ahh...great. That sounds easy enough to do, and a lot cheaper!

W'll...I think it may be a while before I could live only off the seeds of
my efforts in these areas right off, thus, I am job seeking too. But, now
I've retired from San Diego Trolley, I can pick and choose what I'd like to
do. :-)
