View Full Version : Bootlog Failure Seems Audio Related

I have a Pentium III running WinMe, VIA Technologies VT8601 and I recently
upgraded to their Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver package which speeded up
booting noticeably. It shares IRQ10 with the WDM Communication Device and
the ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering, but System Information reports no
conflicts, no problem devices and no forced hardware. Device Manager also
shows Wave Device for Voice Modem and Wave Sound Driver for Total Recorder
are installed.

I have an occasional and long-standing boot failure (since before the last
re-installation of Windows) that happens after the Taskbar and Desktop icons
are loaded, and the last line in Bootlog.txt before it fails is:

*** Enumerated Microsoft Kernel Audio Mixer ***

Using Bootlog Analyser to examine the sequence of events I find that
enumeration happens 7 times, the Audio Mixer is then removed and again
loaded, it is enumerated for an 8th time, again removed and re-loaded and
the hang-up occurs on the 9th enumeration. Enumerations 5,6,7 and 8 are all
very slow. I must use the Reset button to re-start but Scandisk reports no
errors and the re-boot is always successful with only 4 Audio Mixer
enumerations. There seems to be nothing unusual about the previous session
or shutdown.

I also have NAV2001 and ZoneAlarm5 which normally load just after the
failure point.

Can someone please explain what is going on and how I can fix it? Since the
problem is intermittent, I will have no way of knowing it's fixed for some
time.

Please, has anyone who read my first posting got some ideas what might be
wrong? The problem is unchanged since before my last rebuild (for other
reasons) so re-installing Windows and device drivers didn't have any effect.
