ME with ps2/mouse and usb/kb. Upon boot up, both are functioning but after a
while the mouse hang. Any idea what causes these. Since we mouse cant move,
how can I go to see the 'IRQ'. It will work ok upon reboot but the problem
will appear again.(ME besides the usual driver for the graphic card, modem,
it only have the DSL driver install.)Many thanks

check it out in Safe Mode - open Device Manager there, and look for
duplicated or redundant entries - remove ALL instances, and reboot to Normal
Mode - Windows will reinstall drivers required

Begin by testing with a known-good second mouse. If it works fine, examine
the original mouse cord, esp., where it enters the mouse, for damage.
Wiggle the cord while the mouse works fine, attempting to screw it up. If
it is defective, replace it. And confirm that the connector seats firmly
into the port on the back of the box.

Noel and Jack,

Shy to say, how do I get to safe mode in ME. Press F8 to no effect. Change
the ps2 mouse, no improvement. Sometimes when switch on pc, its already hang,
sometimes it works and then gets stuck. Sometimes, a slight movement of the
mouse will give you a dialogue page (an action as if you right click the
desktop). Sometimes it seems to work ok until I shut down the pc. (This is
the same senario when using the 'old' mouse).

Looking into the sys info, under component its has a problem device
ACPI\PNPOCOF\... error code 22

Under H/W resource, ACPI IRQ for PCI IRQ steering is IRQ 9 and IRQ 11.
Hope this will assist, many thanks

To boot into safe mode?

Holding down or 'stabbing at' the F8 or Ctrl are the 'Official' methods, but
you do need to try these keys IMMEDIATELY you power up your PC and keep
'stabbing' at them. You may even need to keep them pressed throughout the
boot process. You could also try using the Shift key (see above conditions).

Another alternative is when your machine is running in Normal Mode, run
msconfig.exe and on the General tab, select Advanced and check the 'Enable
Startup Menu' box.
Don't forget to uncheck the box when you've finished with it <g>

Aha!
Test with a new known-good keyboard.
The bad one may be interfering with the mouse.

And your Error Code 22 is irrelevant:

"Error Code 22:
See MS KB 272291 - "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering" Problem Device
Entry
in System Information Tool" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=272291) where
you will find it stated that what you are seeing is "by design".

This problem is often the result of having changed the layout of your PCI
cards or following the removal of a card. Forget about this "error" as it
is
unlikely to have an effect and is simply indicating that the place holder
previously used is no longer required.

And clean up any duplicate mice, in the manner that Mart and Noel have
advised.

Noel and Jack,

Change the kb so the pc now have a 'working' mouse and a 'working' kb.

1st B - looks good, launch IE (fr TBar), launch IE (fr DTop), then go to Sys
Info, write a docs, all looks good ..........jolly .... !!!! so shut down by
closing all the applications 1 by 1. (still getting the message "Installation
failed .. which I post under windows update, ME - Installation failed ...
whengoing to sys info part)

2nd B - mouse hang (have not done anything yet)
3rd B - same as 2nd
4th B - mouse working, launch IE(Tb), looks good and shut down
5th B - same as 4th but also launch IE(DT) and looks good and shut down
6th B - Mouse hang
7th B - Mouse hang
8th B - back to life as 1st Boot, hurray !!!!!

so I shall complete the sentence now .... looks jolly good !!!

Next try on F8
9th B - missed the F8
10th B - Oh "YES .... yes ......."
and give the start-up menu but kb does not response to my choice. so
power off.
11th B - missed the F8 but the mouse hang
12th B - just let it boot up and the mouse seems working without launching
any IE . but hang on as I am tying this a slight movement of the mouse seems
to drag a box and cant change its direction, it only get bigger and bigger if
you try to use the mouse

This is serious stuff and I am not kidding on NY day.
So hows that for the NY mystery..... and I will keep you posted, Meantime
just dont know who is going to win, man or the beast (pc).......my god .....

Just press ALT/DEL to shut down the pc.............. man

This is a PS/2 KB, right?
If so, then I fear you may have motherboard problems.
Can you try a USB Keyboard? - you'll need to adjust the BIOS if possible to
'Enable Legacy USB Support'

ps2/mouse and usb/kb. Guess you may have solve the mystery. Just checked the
Bios, 'Legacy usb support' was 'disabled' and now been "enabled" which now
response and able to get to the desktop.

will see how the mouse behave and try the F8 thing later. Need to be able to
get the 'Window Updates' to obtain the latest patches and hope it can be
resolve. Will post this progress in the other column "Windows Update/windows
update general.

Noel, Mart and Jack, many thanks for all your help.ts a great relief for now
while I try to get the pc working in the way in which its suppose to work,
thanks again.

The mouse did not behave herself. By moving it, the window sometimes re-size
itself. Need to test a bit more. Many thanks
