View Full Version : Boy am I screwed

Beau
December 9th 04, 10:47 PM
I was trying to figure out how to put passwords on
individual files. The dude said go to Freeware which I
did. I downloaded WinCry. It said that it had to change
some of my system settings and then reboot to which I
said Okay. Well upon rebooting My mail program wouldn't
load (incredimail) I can read ME newsgroups but can't
post and there is no restore point. And who knows what
else is screwed up? I went to add/remove programs and
removed WinCry but needless to say the damage is done.
Ofcoarse I have to use a different computer to post but
at least I can read the responses from My main pc. God I
hope I don't have to reformat! Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Beau

Best advice is probably to get rid of Incredimail - it's dross anyhow!

Why is there no restore point? Did WinCry delete them?

How do I check and/or change my ActiveX Controls?
And I don't get an error messege on my system restore
it's just that all my restore points semm to have
dissapeared. I can create a manual restore point but when
I open the restore calendar there are no restore points
before the one I just created. I try to go back a month
or so but the calendar just stays on December.

Sorry that it's taking so long for me to reply it's just
that I have to go to another pc to reply.

Thanks again

ActiveX settings.....
Internet Properties
Security -
set Internet Zone to Default/Medium
see if that helps

System Restore.
It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without
which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the
file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed
the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.

To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download
the patch for offline install
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290700
Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the
adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most
purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.

If the version is 4.90.0.3003, then you will neeed to reset System Restore -
To Reset System Restore -
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check
"Disable System Restore",
Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot.
This will flush you restore folder and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck
"Disable System Restore",
Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot.
This should now automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following
the restart.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder,
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider
to your preferred setting.

Most people find that a setting of 200-300MB is sufficient to hold 10-15
days worth of restore points, unless you are doing a lot of
installs/uninstalls, or installing large applications (such as Office).

See if that helps - create a couple of restore points, with a reboot in
between, and see whther they still exist after another reboot - then try the
test for SR (instructions here
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/quiktipsr.htm )

Okay I went to Internet options, Security, the security
level was on custom so I changed it to medium but still
no change. I can read the newsgroups but when I try to
post the window starts to come up and then nothing. The
SMGR.DLL is version 4.90.0.3003. Now what??

Thanx

Have you tried a reset of System Restore yet?

WRT your problem with these newsgroups....
how are you accessing them? - which EXACT URL are you using (it does make a
difference, unfortunately, some are more up-to-date than others)??
with that information, we can try to replicate the problem

Is your Passport properly recognised?

Hi,
Well, Noel's advice should help you get System Restore working. I doubt that
WinCry killed SR. It's easy to not notice that SR isn't working.

As for Incredimail... There's info on saving/transferring data files at
http://www.incredimail.com/english/help/im/transfer_incredimail.html but
that won't help if you can't open Incredimail. You might try booting in safe
mode- hit F8 repeatedly as soon as the machine begins to startup. You might
then be able to save IM data files restart and reinstall IM.

I think that the difficulty in posting to the newsgroup is a separate issue.

Hope this helps,
Don
