You haven't kept your CDs in good conditions. If you put a quite new CD in
the drive, you'll see that the drive won't have any problems with it.
Otherwise the drive might be faulty. You can also use a lens cleaner to
clean the lens.

Folks,

I have a msi 48x16x48 cd rom.

i seem to be having some trouble with it which, in hindsight has been
occuring for some time.

- I put the cd in .
- although autorun is selected, more often than not I have to kickstart the
cd via 'run'.
- some cds are notoriously slow (my son's harry potter game takes almost two
minutes, or more to start)
- the cd player seems to start up, with the indicator light flashing, then
it goes a solid green colour, and then flashes for awhile and seems to speed
up and then slow down (it is all very annoying).
- i run win98se, 1100mhz amd, 256 ram, 30gb harddisk.

I did have nero installed but deleted it hoping it would make a difference -
alas no.

any suggestions??

Thanks
Michael

CD drives are cheap and brittle. You might as well
replace yours with one from a better brand.

folks,

replaced the cd rom and no problems now - even with the disks that weren't
working before.

I think the old girl had simply had enough.

thanks for the suggestions.
