Windows ME VS Window 98

I am rebuilding an old computer (pentium III - 1000) for my mother - limited
use, mostly email and MS Word use. I have both ME and 98 available to install
for her. I know 98 was more stable but wouldn't you recommend ME since it is
newer?
Just wanted a few opinions.

Win 98 is NOT 'more stable' - merely better-supported by most hardware
vendors.
For the circumstances you're in, I would (without hesitation) recommend that
you go for ME, as your support of your mother's PC could well end up being
'use System Restore to get back to the last time it worked' - and that
option is NOT available in Win98!!

Is it true that Microsoft plans to discontinue product support and advice
for Win95, Win98, WinMe, Win2000 in mid 2005?
If so, why is it happening?
Need to know whether I should just buy a new computer to prepare for their
withdrawl.

but roughly speaking......
Win 9x is dead - and has been since the beginning of the year. ONLY security
fixes are likely to appear prior to the official burial in 2006.

If your current hardware supports XP then there's no reason you shouldn't
install it (providing you install SP2!).
