I had to format my hard drive and am now reinstalling
Win98. It asks for the product key. I haven't had the
product key in YEARS. What do I do to reinstall, short of
buying a new Win98. I had upgraded to Windows XP, so I
can't load that on unitl I have Win98 on board.

If you are only installing W98 so that you can install XP then don't
bother - just install XP. When it asks you to prove that you are eligible to
use the upgrade version, put the W98 CD in the drive.

out what to do? My son's computer (my very old one)
crashed and I had to reinstall Windows 98 SE. I have
tried to set up his wireless internet connection and it
is asking me for a product key. I can find every other
product key of Window that I have, ME, XP, XP
Professional but I have not idea where I put the booklet
for the Windows 98 SE that has the product key. What can
I do??? Please help as my son is only 4 and is very
computer literate and wants to play his games on his
computer. I can't get the thing working and need
help....Thank you...Be Blessed in your day!

The W98 ProductKey is generally found on the Windows user manual, the
certificate of authenticity, a sticker on the PC or a sticker on the sleeve
or jewel case the Windows CD came in. The 25-digit key is 5 groups of 5
alpha/numeric characters. The Key might be available from the system:

If the system is working in either safe or normal mode:

Open regedit.exe to this key and look in the right pane for the entry
ProductKey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

If the system is not working, start the computer with a floppy startup disk.

At the A: prompt, type: C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey"
C:\Windows\System.dat
(Note: ProductKey must be typed in upper and lower case letters as shown
and there is a space after: "Find" after: "/N" and after:
"ProductKey"

If the hard drive has been formatted or replaced, US customers can contact
Microsoft at: 1 800 642-7676. They will issue retail and OEM product keys
after verifying data located on the W98 CD.
