I installed my new USB flash drive using the Win 98 drivers provided. Even
though Windows recognised the driver after reboot, My Computer never displays
the drive - Device Manager reports some sort of problem with ntkern.vxd -
what on earth does this mean?

Did a Google search of <ntkern.vxd> . It would appear to be your driver.

I had a simillar problem 2 weeks ago (see my post dated 11/7/2004 Problem
installing USB drivers). The answers on how to do proper install of drivers
are shown there.
