After I formatted my computer and put Windows 98 back on,
there was no sound icon in the tool bar. The box for
sound control is grayed out in the Windows Set Up tab on
the Add and Remove Programs in Control Panel. There are
no sounds in the computer.

However using headphones, I can hear a CD play.

It doesn't seem to be a sound card or driver problem. The
computer sees everything as working properly in Device
Manager. There are no conflicts. I'm using the same
driver as was working in it before formatting.

I've reinstalled Windows and that didn't help. I don't
know what to do next. Can anyone help? Jo

What about Control Panel-Multimedia?
Is "Show volume control on the taskbar" checked?

Have you tried this command from Start-Run to use the Sounds applet?

control mmsys.cpl sounds

....Alan

When I type in the command you recommended, it takes me
to the place to set up sound schemes for windows events.
When I click on anything to play, it says "your sound
card may be in use."

The "Show volume control on the taskbar" box is grayed
out.
