Explorer error prevents computer usage

My old computer suddenly stopped working correctly with applications throwing
up invalid page fault in module <unknown> etc. It seems to be connected to
explorer though I also think the boot file has been modified in some way. A
virus scan in safe mode detected nothing.

A typical error message is as follows:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:01a71294

If anyone can help with advise I would be very grateful. I am wondering if
I need to re-install windows 98? I uninstalled explorer and it reverted to
version 5 but it didn't make any difference.
