View Full Version : pci mass controller probs

Burt
November 13th 04, 10:01 AM
Howdy,
Just formatted and reloaded 98SE, complete with all patches and updates
and have two problems..
The PCI mass controller is bombed out in Device Manager and I can't get rid
of it... I can remove it and on the next boot it wants drivers again..

Also, C drive seems to be running in Compatability Mode and I checked
everything I know to check and can't seem to undo it..
Hope you got some ideas..

TIA

What is the actual name of the item that is splatted in Device Manager? I don't
think it is listed there as "PCI mass controller". Do you really mean "PCI Mass
Storage Controller"?

If you have a Promise ATA 100 or Highpoint controller on the motherboard and you are
using it, you need to install the drivers from the CD that came with the
motherboard.

If you are not using these controllers on the motherboard, you should be able to
disable them in the BIOS.
You need to read the motherboard manual for whatever board you have.

Remove the PCI Mass Storage Controller from the 'Other' category in Device Manager,
preferably in Safe Mode. Then either install the drivers from the m-board CD, or
disable the controller in the BIOS.

See here for more info:

Is the C: drive running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode, or does it just "seem to be"
as you wrote? Control Panel> System> Performance tab: does it say drives are in
compatibility mode?

Open Device Manager.....are the Hard disk controllers or any other item marked with
a red X or a yellow exclamation mark?

Search the Registry for an entry named "noide"...delete if found.

Restart in Safe Mode.
-Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
-Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.
Open Device Manager, expand the categories, remove all instances of any devices that
were marked with a red X or a yellow exclamation mark in normal mode.
Remove all items in the "Other" category.
If any duplicates are found in the following categories, remove ALL instances of the
item:
Hard disk controllers, floppy disk controllers, CDROM, CD-ROM controllers, and Disk
drives.
Click OK, and restart in normal mode, letting Windows detect the items, and reboot
when prompted.

Glee,
It was getting late last night and I forgot the word "Storage".
Yes, you are right, it is PCI Mass Storage Controller.. The computer
doesn't ask for the driver anymore, but it is yellow Exclamation Point in
"Other Devices". I am going to put the Dell installed stuff here below.. I
can't seem to figure out WHICH drivers are the proper ones and/or where to
get them. I did a LOT of reading this morning on several sites and did read
everything you mentioned on your reply. Are the drivers I need the ones
listed below in 15392U ? This info below is what Dell says is the Original
Configuration.. Maybe you can make something out of the text below:
Sorry about then all CAPS, but that is the way it pasted.

1 3450R PROCESSOR MODULE, 80525, 500M, 512K, SL1, KC0
1 83MWP CARD (CIRCUIT), PLANAR (MOTHERBOARD), W/AUD, XPS-TXXXr, COPPERMINE
1 0582C MODULE, FLOPPY DRIVE, 1.44M, 3.5" FORM FACTOR, 3MD, NO BEZEL, NEC
CORPORATION, DUAL
1 09EYU MODULE, MODEM, V.90, DATA/FAX/VOICE, ASIA, LATIN AMERICA, NORTH
AMERICA, SOUND
1 28578 MODULE, DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 128, 100M, NON-ECC
1 3340D KEYBOARD, 104, 6P, UNITED STATES, NMB, RUBBERDOME
1 4257U MODULE, SOFTWARE, WKS-STE2K, 5.25" FORM FACTOR, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT
MFGR., ENGLAND/ENGLISH
1 5120P CORD, POWER, 125V, 6FT, SPT2, UNSHIELDED
1 5392U MODULE, CARD (CIRCUIT), CONTROLLER, PROGRAMMABLE READ ONLY MEMORY,
ATA-66, DIMENSION
1 5702T MODULE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, WINDOWS 98, OSR1, ENGLAND/ENGLISH, DELL
AMERICAS ORGANIZATION
1 6156T MODULE, CARD (CIRCUIT), NETWORK, V5.21, 3C900B, OP
1 6271R DISPLAY, MULTISCAN, COLOR, 17, DUAL, P780, GOVERNMENT SERVICES
AGENCY
1 6278C KIT, SPEAKER, MULTI-MEDIA, HARMAN KARDON, 120V/60H
1 6580R MODULE, CARD (CIRCUIT), VIDEO, ATI TECHNOLOGIES INC, XPRT98, TXXX
1 66FRH KIT, SOFTWARE, NAV-2K, 5.25" FORM FACTOR, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MFGR.,
ENGLAND/ENGLISH
1 785EE MODULE, COMPACT DISK READ WRITE, I, 8X, SONY, SECOND, KLINGER
1 886MJ MOUSE, PERSONAL SYSTEM 2, 6P, 2BTN, WHEEL, MICROSOFT
1 929PK MODULE, HARD DRIVE, 10G, I, 7.2K, WD-XL20, KLGR

I don't have the motherboard manual OR the disk... All that I have is the
Windows 98SE full version, (at least I think it is the full version).
Here is what the machine is: Dell XPS T500 PIII, 128 Ram and the Service Tag
is "ctwek". I looked that up on Dell Support and the above info is what it
shows.
Sorry for the long post!, but I really want to fix this for the people..
Computer seems to run fine and it no longer asks for the drivers on bootup,
so maybe I should just leave it alone?? I kinda hate to do that. There are
no other devices splatted or red x'ed or yellow exclams.

As for the compatability mode deal, here is what it says:

Under the Performance tab of the System Properties display, I get the
messages "Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance" and
"Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode filing system". I assume these
messages are related to lack of the proper driver. At least I can't find
another cause.
I certainly appreciate the help Glee...

This may be your driver here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P03_XPS_T___&os=W98&osl=en&deviceid=353&devlib=26&category=26&releaseid=R20628

Here is a shorter URL to that page:
http://snipurl.com/amh6

Follow the instructions on the web page...I appears to be the driver you need.
After you install it, if the C: drive is still in compatibility mode, we will
continue with that.

Glee,
About an hour before you posted this last one, I got the driver and got
it installed and now I don't have anymore problems with the PCI Mass Storage
Controller... WHEW, glad that is done, HOWEVER, In the System
Info/Components/Problem Devices, I see that the Primary IDE controller (dual
fifo) has a problem.. It says that this item has been disabled in the
hardware... Soooo, I looked in the BIOS and it shows that the primary ide as
(none). I attempted to change that but there are no options offered.... I
also went thru all of the URLS that both of you sent and found that it seems
there is a problem with the particular on that is running on said computer.
It calls for a driver named: ESDI_506.pdr which I have found on driver guide
but haven't yet installed it because I did a search on said computer for
that file and it is there in Windows/System/Iosubsys folder as it should
be.... I suppose it is possible that it might be corrupted? I will wait for
your answer on this one.
Thankyou much for your continued interest in this problem.

Glee,
By the way, it no longer shows the "Compatability Mode" problem as noted
before... I forgot to put that on the last note back to you.... We have
gained and I might not bother trying to fix the IDE deal because nothing is
bombed out in Device Manager.
Is it an OK idea to just leave it alone and forget about it , or should I
pursue it further? See other note of a few minutes ago.
Thanx again.

If it is disabled in the BIOS, you may be using the controller card for which you
just got the driver, for your primary hard drive controller. Have you looked inside
the computer case to see what drive is connected to what controller?

Don't use a downloaded esdi_506.pdr. If you need it replaced (which I doubt), you
can extract it from the Windows CD. I would lean toward leaving it be, at this
point, if Device Manager is showing things working, and you are no longer in
compatibility mode on any drives.

Glee,
I didn't install that esdi driver and I am with you, it is running quite
well and the ONLY place you can see anything wrong is in the System Info
under Problem Devices..
As for inside the case, yes I have been there and it is just the way Dell
shipped it.
These folks bought it new and I know they never had the lid off of it nor
has it ever been touched.
When I do these computers for people I always open them up and blow them out
good and check and usually replug everything and then drop it on the floor a
couple times to make sure everything stays put... HA...
Thanks very much for your time. Will see you on the trail..

I would think it to show in DM as disabled also. If your HD's are on a =
controller card and not on the mobo IDE, then the BIOS will show as =
none. Two of my machines use Promise PCI controllers for the HD's, and =
the BIOS along with POST show none. The HD's show up afterwards when =

November 15th 04, 02:09 AM
Glee,
The HD is connected to the PCI Mass Storage controller and the CD ROM
drive is hooked to the 2nd IDE controller on the MoBo..
Anyway, all is well in the Northland with it at this time and thankyou again
for you time. I do appreciate it... That is the first time I have had that
much trouble after a reformat and reload... Usually I can figure it all out.
Your suggestions did put me in the right direction...
Burt

Brian,
For some reason that I am not sure of, they drives showed up in
DM before I put the drivers in for that PCI Mass Storage controller..
It was what was giving me the bonkers... Anyway, I found the drivers
for the PCI device (ATA 66/whatever) and bingo, the OTHER listing
was gone from DM and I got no more boot up warnings about no drivers.
Just for the info, there was no "noide" listed in the registry at any time.
This particular situation does not show anything to do with PROMISE.
Anyway, all is well in the Igloo, soup in the pot and a few sticks of
firewood left... I got it made and thanks for the help.
Ha Ha, I like your gonefis'n sig file.... cute...

I would think it to show in DM as disabled also. If your HD's are on a
controller card and not on the mobo IDE, then the BIOS will show as none.
Two of my machines use Promise PCI controllers for the HD's, and the BIOS
along with POST show none. The HD's show up afterwards when handed/switched
over to the controller card which has its own BIOS.
