View Full Version : Right click on shortcuts

I don't know if anyone can help me, but my problem is not really as much of a
problem as it is an annoyance. Recently, I installed the new AVG Free
edition and noticed something I have never noticed before. When I right
click on a shortcut on my desktop or in the list of program files, I get the
following pop up menu:

***************
Open
Quick View
E-mail with Yahoo!
WinZip
Scan with AVF Free
------------------------
E-mail with Yahoo!
WinZip
Scan with AVG Free
------------------------
Sent To
------------------------
Cut
Copy
------------------------
Create Shortcut
Delete
Rename
------------------------
Properties
*****************

Note that "E-mail with Yahoo!", "WinZip", and "Scan with AVG Free" are
duplicates. Why is this? When I right click on a file, however (not a
shortcut, but the actual file), the duplicates are not there.
Also, when I have the AVG boot-up scanner activated (runs from the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file) the computer runs and then shuts down before Windows even
finishes loading. I have disabled the boot-up scanner and this seems to have
eliminated that problem. However, I am still perplexed as to why there are
duplicates of three items in the pop up menu. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

(By the way, the second listing in the pop up menu for "Scan with AVG Free"
was causing a program error, so I ran RegClean.exe from windows-help.net and
that eliminated the program error.)

The only time I remember seeing similar duplicates was with users who
followed an unfortunate "fix" to remove the overlay arrows on
shortcuts by removing the IsShortcut value on .lnk files.

Did you do that?
If so, put it back.

Yes, I did do this. You know what? I don't even know what the values of
IsShortcut was in both lnk folders was...do you know how I would go about
replacing these values since I deleted the value all together? Is it a DWORD
value or what????Otherwise, I guess I will just have to live with it.

It is a String value named IsShortcut, with no data in the value, in this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile

No, you don't have to live with it.

Make a file from the lines below called Link.reg and doubleclick it.
You can use Notepad to create it from this message. Don't retype it as
an error might occur. Copy it.
Ensure that REGEDIT4 is the first line and that your mail/newsreader
does not add a space to the end of any line.
Ensure the last line is blank.

You may need to restart Windows after this fix to see the effect.

----------Link.reg ----below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
@="Shortcut"
"EditFlags"=hex:01,00,00,00
"IsShortcut"=""
"NeverShowExt"=""

--------(end of link.reg-----

My crystal ball tells me you have applied the wrong registry
fix to remove shortcut arrows from all your icons. It tells
me that you deleted the IsShortcut entry from several items
in the registry and that if you put them back the doppelganger
entries in your right click menu will disappear.

Well known funkyness of the IsShortcut fix for shortcut arrows.
Crystal ball is actually on the blink.

Thank-you for the solutions! I used both methods described. I used your
solution, Alan, to fix the regestry entry in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile,
and I used your solution, Glee, to fix the problem in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile, since I had deleted the value, IsSortcut, from
there also. That problem is now fixed. Thank-you again!

***The following message will also be placed in the Windows 98 General
section under the topic AVG boot-up Scanner***

Can anyone tell me why the AVG Boot-up scanner shuts down my machine before
Windows finishes loading? The AVG Boot-up scanner is an MS-DOS program which
runs from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The boot-up scanner seems to run fine. But
after it's finished running, instead of continuing to load Windows, it shuts
down the machine. The next time I restart my machine, I get the message that
Windows did not finish loading on the last start-up and I have the option of
running in Safe Mode. I never choose Safe Mode, however. I always choose
Normal, and the AVG Boot-up scanner runs again, but this time, Windows loads
and my machine does not shut down before it is finished loading. This is
very strange behavior and the only way to solve the problem is to disable the
boot-up scanner (which is what I've done for now). Does anyone else use AVG
and the boot-up scanner with Windows 98 SE? Any suggestions? Thanks in
advance.
