Using IBM Thinkpad with win98 when shutting down now I get this every time:
fatal exception at 0177:BFF9DBA7 current application will be terminated and so on.
Never saw that one before, this is a computer on loan to me so I don't know if this was happening before. I just turn it off and when it is turned back on it scans itself and then starts windows with no further problems.
Any ideas or suggestions?
thank you in advance

The error is probably caused by a hardware device that is having
trouble disconnecting from Windows (or that Windows is having trouble
disconnecting).

James Eshelman has an excellent website focusing on Windows shutdown
problems:

http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm

Also the Microsoft KnowledgeBase offers the document 238096, "How to
Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems".
