I was runing IE 4.0 and I downlaoded and installed IE 6.0, along with all the
recommended critical updates. Having done that, I now get the following
message when I start up:
EXPLORER
This program has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down. If the
problem persists, contact program vendor.

On opening the details, it reads:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module SHD0CVW.DLL at 015f:7172ee9c.

I can't go beyond this and has to shut down the PC. Please tell me what I
need to do to correct this error.

That is an "O" (oh), not a "0" (zero), in SHDOCVW.DLL.

Oh, um, Brian A. always issues a caution about the second article...
.......Quote the caution.......
See if this helps.
Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After You Install
Internet Explorer

Some have had trouble when it comes to Article #129605 at step #3. What
you need to do is reinstall your version of IE to work out the missing
files issue.
Look for the IE#setup.exe files in:
C:\Progra~1\Intern~1
or
C:\Windows\Window~1

To overinstall IE6:
First, close all via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Explorer (includes your AV
program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe.
Select Minimal - Custom, select all the parts you use (but not any you
didn’t originally download) and overinstall. Should take about 2
minutes.
Reboot...the computer.
