View Full Version : Can't delete e mails

I have a problem that started a few months ago and is rapidly getting worse.
Often when I try to delete an e mail nothing happens. To delete I have to
exit Outlook Express 6 and if this doesn't help I have to resart my computer.

Does shift-delete work? If so, I suppose your deleted email box is corrupt.
Find the 'Deleted items.dbx' file and delete it (with OE closed).

Thanks for replying. Shift delete doesn't work.

Try compacting all OE folders:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm

If no joy:

- Close OE

- In Windows Explorer, navigate to your identity's store
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain), find and delete
Outbox.dbx.

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline".

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Thanks PA Bear. Compacting my OE folders didn't make any difference. I found
my Outbox.dbx but I'm a bit nervous about deleting it. I don't understand the
next bit "Don't use Inbox or...Move them to local." and " Disable
Background...a manual".
I see I have 44,000 items in my deleted file. Does that matter?

Yes, that's *why* Deleted Items.dbx is corrupted!

[If Deleted Items holds stuff you don't want anymore, why do you hang on to
44,000 of 'em? If you think you might need/want them, don't delete them from
their original folders in the first place: *move* them to user-created Local
folders for archiving.]

<blushes> BTW, I mis-copy/pasted: You want to delete *Deleted Items.dbx*,
not Outbox.dbx. Sorry.

The default folders Inbox, Sent Items (and Deleted Items) are constantly
being "written to" in the normal operation of OE. They are very fragile
folders (and OE's coding isn't the most rigorous and dependable in the world
of computing), hence you don't want to keep too much in them...ever.

Thanks again. I save them because quite often I want to search through them
for something. You say "move them to user created folders for archiving". So
would I create folders in OE or somewhere else?

I finally figured out how (I'm a bit slow sometimes) to delete my Deleted
Items.dbx last night. My delete seems to be working now. I will reply in a
few days again. Thanks.
