View Full Version : Installing W98 SE update--What hints?

I will shortly travel to my sister's, where she has a Dell with
Windows 98. Since I want to add Norton Internet Security 2005, and
since that program requires having W98 SE on the machine, I will take
my old SE update CDROM with me and install it.

Question: What hints, preliminary steps, procedures, etc. should I
apply when I install the SE package?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Following are the replies you missed the first time here. But it would
be best to find that thread here.

To connect directly to this NG, copy the following into your browser's
Address Bar. After this, you will no longer need to connect through the
CDO. You will use Outlook Express to access the NG.

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion
However,
(1) At "OE, Tools menu, Message Rules, News", create a Message Rule to
delete posts older than, say, 10 days. Also check "stop processing more
rules".
(2) At "Tools, Options, Read tab", uncheck "Get xxx headers at a time".
(3) R-Clk the NG in the left pane, Synchronize Settings, set to All
Messages.
(4) Click "Tools, Synchronize Newsgroup"

(Now, it is a bit tricky. When I click one of those things, it gets
right to it. One really need stop it & get that rule in. I do believe,
it will then not download older than the rule specifies.)

Posts older than 10 days will not download. Posts that age on your
machine after the download are your responsibility to delete, by
occasionally going to that rule & clicking "Apply Now". After that,
compact: "OE, File menu, Folder, Compact all folders".

Colorado disagrees, but there is a cave-dwelling MVP around, who says...

(1) "OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab".
(2) Uncheck "Delete news messages x days after being downloaded".
(3) Uncheck "Compact messages in the background".

Went there and read the three messages. Thanks.

Do I recall correctly that the SE update contains IE 5.0, and that, if
I have already installed IE 6.0 on my sister's W98 machine, I have to
remove IE 6.0 before installing SE and reinstalling IE 6.0?

I fear you are asking the wrong person, as I am Compaq & never did that.
STILL...

(a) Right, It's highly unlikely the "Update" disk or any of the others
will have IE6 on it, might even be IE4 on some of them.
(b) Not only IE6, but any large app probably is at some risk, whenever
any big thing is done.
(c) The catch 22 of it is... un/reinstalling the large apps can itself
be asking for trouble.

This is why it is always best to have a full system backup to run to.
Would you like my list of apps? Never mind, here they are...

Once you have a functioning system, especially one close to a clean
install, do a full system backup. If you have multiple partitions, I
guess a backup is a bit more complex. It depends upon the ties between
the Registry & the other partitions, as to whether they must be backed
up concurrently. Also, if you've changed the hardware since the backup,
you may need to change it back before a restore.

I believe that is correct, and the correct procedure (to avoid some problems
that might otherwise result).

You know, maybe Gary or one of the others in here can answer this
definitively, but I really wonder exactly what would happen IF one did
attempt to install Win98SE over a system with IE 6 already on it. Any
chance of NOT having to do a clean reinstall of Windows?

I have done it ...IE 6 will have to be reinstalled ( had to uninstall and
reinstall)
