Okay I just installed an 80GB Hard drive (Maxtor) Loaded
ME and everything seems to be working great. However, when
I click on my C drive it says that it only has a 1.99 GB
capacity. What's up with that? How do I get it to
recognize all 80 Giggs??

Thanks

Beau

Does your BIOS recognize it as an 80Gb drive, or some other size?

How do I get to the Bios to find out?

When you fdisk'd the new drive did you remember to click Y when asked
about large disk support. If all you are seeing is 2GB it would appear
that you may not have and as a result have a drive using the FAT16 format
rather than FAT32 and the maximum drive size using FAT16 is 2GB.

To be honest I'm really not sure. When I formatted I just
used an ME Boot disk and from DOS I just typed in Format
C: and then installed ME. I did just go into the Bios and
clicked on Primary Master and it said Maximum capacity
81964MB so now what Mike?

Beau,

You must have fdisk'd the drive as otherwise you would not have been able
to format it. Don't worry about the motherboard bios for now, all that is
important there is that the new drive is recognised by the bios.

Use fdisk again, you can do this from a DOS window whilst running Win Me,
click Y when prompted to enable large disk support, switch to the new
drive (option 5), select the new drive from those listed, and then back at
the main menu click 4 to display the partition information for the drive.
This should tell you how the disk has been partitioned, how much space is
still to be partitioned and the file system in use in the various
partitions.

If, as I suspect, you have a FAT16 system then the best course is to start
over again and repartition the drive but this time first ensure that you
have enabled large disk support when starting fdisk. Remember though that
this will wipe all data from the drive so before doing so you may want to
back up any irreplaceable or valuable data that is on the drive.

Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk"

Mike,

As usual you are right again. It says fat16. But when I
tried to delete the partition and start over it
said, "Could not change partition because the disk could
not be locked." Whatever that means??

Beau,

OK. My bad, I thought the new disk was a second disk and that you were
running Win Me from the original disk but on re-reading your first post in
this thread I see you have installed Win Me on to this FAT16 2GB partition
on your new disk.

Personally, assuming that you only clean installed Win Me in the last few
days I would start all over, boot to DOS using a Win Me boot floppy, then
run fdisk and format from the DOS prompt as explained in the KB article I
mentioned in my previous post and then reinstall Win Me on to your nice
new FAT32 partition. Whilst Microsoft provide a tool that will allow you
to convert a FAT16 drive to FAT32 (you do this from DOS using the CONVERT
command), Microsoft provide no tools to allow you to resize your
partitions without loss of data although a number of third party products
do exist including Symantec's Partition Magic and Terabyte Unlimited's
BING.

Best of luck.

Use the Maxtor CD to fdisk and format the HD
