Hi
My W98SE PC was configured so when I booted it went straight into the
Windows desktop. I never chose the option to logout, from the Start
menu I always selected Shutdown. At the weekend I decided to try
setting up a User account for my partner. I used a lot of trail and
error setting up the account, the first time selecting the option to
copy all files before settling for the option not to copy the files. I
created three or four accounts before I was happy with the options
chosen. On the first boot I was presented with a new logon screen with
just the new account I created as the only one to choose. I cancelled
this new logon window and the familiar desktop was displayed but what
I have now found is that when I try to access the Internet the
passwords from the IE ISP Login screen have disappeared. Why has this
happened? I tried to access Outlook Express offline but it prompted
for a cached password, it never did this before. I decided to delete
the user account I created but now the new logon screen keeps
appearing although no account is displayed to use! How can I configure
my PC so it starts up as it did before I created the user account? Is
there likely to be anything else that has changed that I have not come
across yet due to the creation of the user account? I would like to
set-up an account for my partner to use what is the best way to
achieve this?
Many thanks for any advice.

Use the link in the article first as noted below, then come back to the =
article for the final cleanup.
How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at =
Startup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;Q152104

*Note: If you have user profiles this will not work as stated in the =
article and you will have to perform the steps in the link provided in =
the article for user profiles.
It has also been advised that you do not use the article Q135586, which =
has a link included in the article. Its purpose is "to clear the User =
Name logon box so it is blank each time you start Windows", it is not =
meant to prevent the logon box from prompting you for a name/password.
Instead if you have TweakUI installed, check to make sure the "Clear =
Last User At Logon" check box is not checked. Go to Start > Settings > =
Control Panel, double click Tweak UI, click the Paranoia tab, if the box =
is checked, uncheck it.
