have killdisked a pc that had windows 98 on, it is ide, so got the bootdisk
and tried to reload windows 98, but cant change directory, am only getting
the A prompt does this suggest that the motherboard is not connecting as the
hard drive is ok? So basically cant get the cdrom to boot.

If the BIOS recognizes the disk you should use fdisk and format.

Follow these instructions.

Start with your floppy
and all you need to type
in at the A prompt is
formatt c:
When the formatt is done type in.
MD C:\Win98 <enter> This is for 1 HD with no partitions.
Copy E:\win98 C:\win98 <enter> If your CD is normally D.
Remove the floppy and type in
C:\win98\setup: <enter>

According to Killdisk -
"To be able to use HDD again you need to:
- repartition HDD using standard utility like FDISK
- reformat partitions using standard utility like FORMAT
- reinstall Operating System using bootable CD-ROM or floppy"

FORMAT will not work until the drive is partitioned.
