Try upgrading or reinstalling the VIA 4-in-1 drivers from the VIA web site, if the
system is using a VIA chipset, or reinstall the drivers from the motherboard
installation disc. Modem or sound drivers can also be responsible, and reinstalling
them may help.

What chipset is on the board?

I got a feeling i found the problem, i have no printer installed and its
definately under that heading.
another thing tho', i looked in as many places as i could think of to
find out what chipset i have, but i couldnt find it; where does one
go to see?
i've been all over the systems area, opened just about everything in control
panel, plus a few other places i didnt know existed.

Run either or both of these utilities to find your chipset and all kinds of other
info about your system:

AIDA, and Everest:

Excellent, thanks for the link.
I have a lot of spy stuff (adaware, cwshredder, sysmechanic, spybot etc) but
there is some really good stuff there.
am grabbing everest, IEspy & few others at the moment.
should be able to get my chipset back to you soon.
One other thing; i'm running 98 and there is no ' system restore point '
option (or that i have found yet), is there a utility out there that i can
use?

Apparently. The link I posted:
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#everest
takes you to the section about Everest, and directly below that it says "Another
Great System Information Tool...", with a link to AIDA32 ver. 3.93
http://aumha.org/downloads/aida32.zip
along with its users' guide:

> 2)will the IEspyad work with other browsers? I use Mozilla

No. From the program's web site:
"...works only with Internet Explorer; it will have no effect whatsoever on Opera,
Mozilla, Netscape 6.0/7.0, or the older Netscape Navigator/Communicator."

No Restore Points in Win98. I suggest using a third-party imaging tool to make
images of your partitions to CD-R (if you have a CD-RW drive).

Image for Windows:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/imagew.html

Image for DOS:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image.html

Symantec's Norton Ghost will also make images for you, at twice the cost.
