I'm trying to install a new Simpletech 160GB external hard
drive. Simpletech says that the driver should be in ME,
but ME can't find the driver. Where should I look for the
driver--would it be on the ME CD? Thanks in advance! I'm
trying to get everything off my computer so I can reformat
my hard drive and get rid of ME (and the viruses from my
cable modem). Thanks!

How is the drive connected Firewire or USB? If USB 2 Win Me contains no
USB 2 drivers. Win Me also cannot use more than 137GB or so of a hard
disk. To fully utilise disks larger than 137GB requires the use of XP SP1
or later.

Mike-

Thanks for your reply. It is connected by USB 2, although
it said it was compatible with 1.1--is it no good with
ME? My computer is on the fritz because of viruses so I'm
afraid to try to upgrade to XP for fear of losing the
digital pictures and such on my hard drive (I've learned
my lesson regarding backing up). Thanks for your help!

Jason,

There should be no problem with USB 2.0, it's just that Win Me includes no
USB 2.0 drivers and these need to be obtained from the motherboard
manufacturer or if using an add-on card from the card manufacturer.

You "should" be able to see the drive in the Device Manager but not in
Windows Explorer until partitioned using fdisk (you can run this from a
DOS window in Win Me) and then formatted. I'm not sure though what you
will see though with a 160GB disk as large disk support is erratic where
disk sizes >137GB although I think there could be less of a problem with
the disk being an external USB.

All you have to do is copy c:\windows\options to c:\options
Use a bootable CD or floppy
delete the c:\windows directory
reinstall ME from c:\options
Then backup whatever
