I'm reinstalling w/98 on an Aptiva mod 2156 system. The VGA drivers
don't seem to be on the 98SE distro. The IBM download site has no VGA
drivers, for 98, or 95 for that matter, for this machine.

The machine was running 98SE with good video (but otherwise screwed
up) before I reisnatlled, so VGA drivers must be around somewhere.

Can someone tell me where ?

Thanks.

Hi Al,

You may have luck at this site:
DRIVER GUIDE SITE
www.driverguide.com Username:drivers Password:All

The Win98 CD has drivers in the DRIVER11.CAB to DRIVER21.CAB files.
If you know the name you can double click the CAB files to open them
then right click the driver you need and extract. The Win98 SE CD
has the same files.

If you try to install the drivers for VGA also try pointing to the
C:\WINDOWS\INF folder. Windows should find the right one if it's
there.

Or when installing the VGA driver point to the Win98 folder on the
Win98 SE CD. That should have what you need as it worked before.

BTW the VGA drivers are in the \drivers\display\vga folder on both
the Win98 and SE CD's. There are two drivers, read the text file.
They can be copied, no need to extract.

Always a good suggestion, and I spent half an hour googling. I even
found the SiS web site which talks about 98 drivers but I can't find
where to acutally download.

A bunch of these sites (driverguide.com, driver-downloads.com) require
registration, and seem dodgy. I don't trust them. Another charges.

OT: I was doing a fresh setup and in the half hour I got infected by
several spyware programs. I had AV softare running, and was behind a
HW firewall, and didn't click on any porn or answer YES to any popups
(I was asked several times.) but got bit, anyway. I'm sure the
registration-required driver sites were trying to get my identity to
use in conjunction with the spyware they would put on my machine.

I have the recent Microsft Patches CD and tried to use it before I
connencted the machine to the internet, but the g*ddammed setup
software _requires_ 600x800 and you so you can't run it without
installing video drivers, first. This is one of my pet peeves of
setup software. Either they require more than 16 colors for the
splash screen, or they paint a panel bigger than 480x600.
