in filling out a form to email a company for help, they
ask what version of windows i have (98 SE), & the next ?
is what's my OS? is that 98 SE, or something else. they
are both "must fill in" blanks for the email to go to
this company. many thanks

They sure sound like they're asking about the same thing to me.

Right-click on My Computer, then click on Properties. The "Version" is the
number reported there. The OS is the descriptive name. IN your case, the OS
is "Windows 98 Second Edition" and your version is 4.10.2222 (or 4.10.2223)
followed by a letter--a, b, c, d or e (I think that's all there are.)

The form is a bit odd in it's request. You could just as easily say
OS="Windows", Version="4.10.2222A" (or whatever.) Given the version number
and that it's Windows, specifying the common name like "Windows 98SE" for
the version is superfluous.

4.10.2223 -- What version is that or were you just using this as an example
and it is not a real Windows Operating System version?

It indicates a hotfix issued after the retail version.

4.10.1998 is original Windows 98, aka Windows 98 First Edition

4.10.1999 and up indicates a hotfix issued after Win98 First Edition
and before Windows Second Edition

4.10.2222 is Windows 98SE, aka Windows 98 Second Edition

4.10.2223 and up indicates a hotfix issued after Windows 98 Second Edition,
including the Windows Security CD

Hmmm... Not sure I remember seeing v. 4.10.1999. I'll have to keep an eye
out, <s>.

I imagine that 1999 hotfixes would be few and far between, but.....
