Had a hard drive error, system restarted, lost
Windows\system directory. Want to reinstall Windows 98
without formating hard drive, want to get some data off
the drive with long file name. Every time I attempt the
installation, I get the error that an OS is already
installed and I end up back out of the Installation. I
did attempt to rename the following files:
bootlog.txt, bootlog.prv, detlog.txt, msdos.sys,
setuplox.txt and system.1st. No luck. Any Idea, or does
anyone know what utility I could use to get my files off
with long name. Everyting is in the 8.3 format.

Thanks Frank

Found my own answer looking at old postings, thanks to
Ron Badour on an older reply, it works, because I have an
OEM CD, I was renaming the incorrect files. Just needed
to rename Win.com and Winver.exe and the installation is
running.

Thanks Ron for your input to this Newsgroup...
