View Full Version : Autovalidating logon screen ...

Another logon related question - help needed ! TIA

Windows 98 SE. With 2 users (profiles), no logon passwords.

On booting-up we get the logon window, and have to validate it
(carriage-return or click!). Else the logon window will stay waiting
forever. I understand this is by design.

Well, what I want is autovalidation of the logon (using the last user
name) after a delay - unless user chooses otherwise.

How to enforce this behavior ? Even if there is not a Microsoft made
or approved solution, I'm prepared to -any- tweak, this means not only
registry editing...

Alternately, is it feasible to TEMPORARILY revert to using logon
without profiles (and without logon) BUT keeping the profiles, with
all associated data, desktops etc, intact, and swith back & forth
between both types of logon ? I do not like the idea of it, cause I
fear Windows would mess up things tremendously in the registry.

Looking forward...

Please refer to my question dated june 8th 2004. Restated briefly :
how to instruct Windows
98 not to halt forever at the logon screen, while retaining 2 user
profiles ?

May I respectfully ask from the regular professional contributors and
established helpers
of this Group, an aknowledgement of my question and an estimate of the
probability
that an answer will eventually be given to this log-on question ?

This is not to flame anybody, only I can't determine if my question
stands unanswered yet
because it is difficult and people are kindly preparing a delicate
answer, or it's just
been ignored because, well, we can't be bothered to research difficult
questions ;)

Thank you again - from someone who appreciates what it means to give
free good advice.

Better go look. Well, here is just one, BUT read it carefully...

What you seek does not exist. There is no way to keep two logon profiles
yet have one "automatically" select itself after a time.

You mean there is no -ready made- way ... Well, no great news, else
why should I be seeking advice
from experts here ? ... I need to be able to do what I described,
while keeping the profiles in reserve,
and I know from experience that should I try and disable the profiles,
Windows will enter a profound and
potentially disastrous reorganization process, read : calamity, which
I cannot afford.

Please, what is the precise component (exe or dll or whatever)
involved in displaying the authorization box
for Win 98 SE ? If only I found out, I could stuff it either a
simulated keypress or a windows message.
Where is (in MSDN ?) the interface specification ?

Sorry if this is a difficult question, it is to me !

With hopeless hope,

PCR , thank you. I had searched already and this :

> How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at

is no news to me. Since it does not do what I want, I came and ask
here.
I can't be the first or only person who wants to auto-cloe that stupid
authorization box, while absolutely NOT disabling the profiles !!!!

As is, it's impossible to use the computer with profiles AND yet have
it autorestart
on predetermined events !

I thought to myself someone must have programmed an alternative, or
found a
way to automate the filling of the auth box (sending a carriage return
would
be enough for my purpose)

Alternatively, IF there were a SAFE method to swith back & forth from
the config using profiles to the no-porfiles config, I would do that.
The Microsoft method as described in the kb articles is a no-no for
that
purpose.

Any other leads please ?

http://www.bootitng.com/ 's BootIt NG, has a variety of backup
capabilities: Copy to HDD, or Image to HDD or to CD.
Shrink/expand your partitions without data loss. Multi-boot, if you
dare. Free, run from floppy, but pay up as I did if satisfied. To
install & use beyond 30 days, $34.95.

......Quote it's .doc's........
"· Under Keystrokes, click Input, and then type up to 15 keystrokes to
be played back when booting this item. The keystrokes are buffered and
carried forward as if you had typed them yourself."
......End of quote.............

HOWEVER, I haven't tried such a thing. Can it be Windows will clear the
keyboard input buffer just prior to the requestor of which you speak?

I haven't tried either. I am 101% sure it won't work, either. Win.com
will discard
any keys left in the DOS/BIOS buffer, even assuming noone else has
eaten them up beforehand ;)
It's a long long way from boot up to Win starting protected mode and
the DOS extender and the
windows kernel proper and ... many components before it gives the hand
to the human user...

I could "debug" this myself, except I'm getting too old and tired of
that kind of "hacking", and
it's a shame one has to do such things by oneself. Microsoft could and
should provide correctly
designed and modular software to begin with, plus adequate interfacing
docs.

Thank you very much indeed
