Question is on my Celeron 733Mhz 512MB machine with 'Ultimate Boot Disk'
Tweaks there is more than just one line as follows:

[vcache]
Chunksize=512
MinFileCache=8192
MaxFileCache=8192

I am also experiencing 'slow performance' using Netscape 7.2 Browser
Javascript page changes.

You only need to add the line to [vcache] that Noel refers to if you have
more than 512MB of RAM installed.

Angus
with the settings you have for [vcache] I'm surprised your system boots at
all!!
remove all three lines - and see what a difference it makes

Please don't snip like that! - I never said that at all!
please repost with your results - and also with contents of the [386Enh]
section of the SYSTEM.INI, and the new [vcache] section

Apologize for any read-between-the lines remarks.
Assumed all avid users of WindowsME like myself at this newsgroup.

Cable ISP will be here tommorrow; had to turn off all the background
services I can to post this. Getting up to 94% packet drop rate instead of
15%.

'Ulimate Boot Disk' (UBD) only allows "under 128MB RAM" installations as
downloaded.
Will follow through to www.startdisk.com with request for update.

P.S. Can you arrange for deletion of duplicate question ?
My station read it did not receive item for posting.

OK - (I have no ability to have posts removed - and the duplicate will have
propagated all over the Internet by now anyhow, so there's no point in
removing it from just the single server farm)

Now delete the contents of the [vcache] section, like I said earlier - which
will speed things up immensely (DON'T delete the section header, though)

You also need to delete the two lines MinPhysPage, and MaxPhysPage from the
[386Enh] section

You seem to have your swapfile redirected to a second partition - is this
correct? How much space is there on the D: drive?

There are a lot of other superfluous entries in the [386Enh] section - have
you been using some kind of 'optimiser' software?? which one? Ah - looks
like it may have been Tweak3D??)

I'd be inclined to REM out the following lines
LocalLoadHigh=1
MinTimeSlice=40
DMABufferSize=64
WindowUpdateTime=200
PageBuffers=32
KeyBoostTime=0.1

There's a couple there that I've never heard of before.
AFAIK, LocalLoadHigh should only be considered for Win3.1!!! (and certainly
only if you're desperate for an extra 4K of DOS low memory in a DOS
window!).
WindowUpdateTime is actively slowing your screen refresh rate down to once
every 200ms (5FPS!!!).
PageBuffers limits your HD caching - unnecessarily
KeyBoostTime looks as if it's actually slowing down your keyboard sensor
rate (the 'recommended' value at one site I looked at is 0.005)
DMABufferSize limits the RAM available for DMA-capable devices -
unnecessarily

Re-booted with edits done.
Thanks for your well worded response on how things work.

ShawCable ISP has fixed things for internet packet losses.

SwapFile is fixed size on logical partition D: with TEMP, Temporary Internet
Files, Netscape Cache, JAVAcache, Real (player). Partition is too small at
2.GB located adjacent to boot drive C:

After re-installing WinME, only optimizer was UBD Tweaks 2.6 which as I
mentioned before installs for "128KB and under" rather than 512KB RAM.

Shouldn't excerpts be posted to Windows general ?

MSconfig has been reset to normal,
but Netscape 7.2 now still cannot keep up with this newsgroups section
loading.
After English>United States must re-load page manually.
Same thing on sub-section Windows>Windows9X.
All JAVA has been removed and re-installed.
QuickTime plug-in removed as it slows everything down.

P.S.

Always thought that my keyboard problems were related to HP drivers.

Still have a hardware device failure which I will post separately if HP
business forum fails to satisfy me next week.

Hmm - not sure about fixed-size swapfiles - I don't like 'em much unless
they're fixed at 2GB.
How big is drive C:?
There's really not a lot of point in locating the swapfile on a second
partition of the primary HD - it may actually slow the system down in
certain circumstances, as the head has further to travel

This has me confused!
> After English>United States must re-load page manually

??

The MS website is optimised for IE - and until recently a lot of it refused
to load in Netscape at all, so it's more likely a problem with the MS coding
than your Netscape<g>

Fixed size is the only way, that I am aware of, to get it to D: from default
C:
Don't have a copy facility other than Windows OS to perform task.
It came up as a means of reducing swapfile defragmentation, stable at 3
fragments.
My processor is Celeron 733Mhz

> How big is drive C:?

C: drive holds all 'Program Files' as some only work where OS is located.
Size varies. Since I am still working on re-install of WinME, currently size
is 5.GB half used.
New programs use it up pretty fast until their caches can be moved to
DATA:E or TEMPS:D such as Outlook Express, Netscape, RealPlayer. Have not
found WMP caches yet.

Read about using this on a newsgroup about a year and a half ago. There is a
little increase in performance.
When TEMP etc moved there, re-installation of OS is made easier.
Track zero error shows up every 6 months or so. Repair shop has tested
drive for several days using their own WinME OS too. Don't have confidence
that their OS will work any better than my OEM CDs.

Firstly, adobe what? and which edition / version? (is it advertised as being
compatible with your operating system)

Second, what operating system (e.g. Windows Millennium) are you running on
"this computer"? (the make and model of the computer may be helpful too)

Thirdly, what error reports do you see when "it keeps rejecting it"? (tell
us the exact wording of any rejection reports or describe any other
indications of failure)

And finally, what "start up issues"? (might be worth fixing them first
before you try installing anything else, as they may or may not be related
to the "adobe" issues)
