View Full Version : Basic 98 setup, maybe CD replacement

After using XP now for several years, I've found that it
is convenient to run one of my old applications on 98. So
I took out my original genuine Microsoft Windows 98
Installation CD and allowed it to format a 6 GB hard drive
and install. Everything went normal until about 7 minutes
before it was complete, and then it started not being able
to find a few dozen .dll files and 'networks' and 'protocol'.
It asked me to put the CD in again, but it didn't seem to
be able to find them. I ended up skipping all those files
and allowed the installation to finish.

It wouldn't surprise me if the CD, having been used maybe
a dozen times on the last 5 years, is a bit dirty, but
missing all those files seems strange. Yet I have no
other explanation. Is there a way to check the CD? On
line maybe? Or a way to obtain a replacement CD if I mail
this one in? Or what do I do to get a full Win98 installation?
Thank you.

What generally happens is the installation program is not looking in the
right place for the files. I suggest starting over and if it cannot find a
file, hit the browse button and browse to the win98 folder containing the
..cab files.

Specifically, Ron, where would you suggest I direct it, when it
asks for a location for a file? Something like E:\i386\something or
other? Of course, I'm sure that at one time it looked for and
found the files, and I can't see how it lost track of where to find
the files it needs.......but the key words are "I can't see how....."

Any source file in an "I386" directory is either from NT, Win2K, or XP
installation CD.
Try "Win98" instead.
