I have windows 98. Booted up using the start up disk.
Already went thru the fdisk command. (Have an existing
partition, pressed y, 4>512M) asked the ? do you want to
boot from cd,w/o cd, I pressed cd support. Then, began to
Format C: /s. Windows started to Format(at this pt I have
a black screen w/white sentences and prompt),checking disk
space, etc. Began to Format then stopped a point and says:
Formatting 9,781.73M(10G HDD)and below this on next line
says: Trying to Recover Allocation Unit 12,762. Is my disk
being formatted? Is looking for this allocation
unit, foregoing any format. The curser is blinking and the
computer light is no longer pulsing. I sense that it
stopped. Do I start over? What is this recover allocation
unit?

Maybe you should start by booting from the startup floppy and running
scandisk from i including thorough mode to test the surface.

The hard disk drive appears to be faulty. Get some diagnostic software from
the www site of the disk drive manufacturer and give it a thorough test.
That should enable you to pinpoint the problem.

Scandisk will not run on an unformatted drive.

Small detail <vbg>. Realized that as I posted the message.

His alternative is the mfgr diagnostics.
