Windows 98 SE
I started with a sound problem and tried to find a
solution using the help files. Unfortunately when I find a
likely description to my problem and tick the box and
then "next", there is no follow up and the screen is
blank. I reinstalled Windows 98 SE but it has made no
difference although I have been told there were a couple
of files missing. Would that be to do with this problem
and how do I retrieve them?
PC World in UK does not offer much help and I wonder if
anyone could suggest a solution. Perhaps I may even be
told why the sound is jumpy and scratchy.
Thank you for your help
Kind Regards

There are 2 separate critical updates that caused the TShoot Wizards to stop working.
For more info and ways to use the wizards, see:
http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Windows/98/98_Tshootr.htm

1st occurrence:
If you do not already have "Show All Files" checked in folder options, you need to
do that first.
To show all files, open My Computer, click on View > Folder Options > View tab. Under
the heading Hidden Files place a check next to Show All Files, Apply/Ok out.
Now find the Tshoot.inf file which should be in c:\windows\inf, right click on it and
select Install from the popup list. Have your Win cd on hand.

Second occurrence, only has workarounds to use the Tshoot Wizards:
This is because the latest critical update (Q824145) places a kill bit on the ActiveX
control tshoot.ocx. What is not recommended is removing the update or the kill bit
altogether as this will open up the vulnerabilities the update fixes, which is more
than killing tshoot.ocx. MS-MVP George (Bindar Dundat) has created a fix that will
open the tshooter and remove the kill bit. Once you close the tshooter it replaces
the kill bit.
