I just built a new system (specs are listed below, bought=20
a new copy of Windows ME, installed the os, the drivers,=20
directx and all updates for ME.
I had a burnt copy for my old system, loved ME and went=20
out and bought a copy from CBW.

Listed below are the problems I am recieving:
=A4 System restarts on its own when already powered down
=A4 System restarts on its own when computer is on
=A4 Recieving a "Windows Protection Error" on bluescreen on=20
random occurances
=A4 I restart my system and it goes to the Command Prompt=20
about 15% of the time.

Also another odd problem was downloading the DirectX from=20
the site here is what i get....
=A4 Did not copy a nessisary file / Install Failed

Listed below are the fixes I have attempted:
=A4 Reinstalled the Drivers for my video card, VIA chipset=20
and restart (many times)
=A4 Reinstalled the DirectX (many times)
=A4 F disk and restalled Windows ME (once)
=A4 Removed 512 of system ddr, restart (twice)- same problems

I continue with the same problems over and over again.

System build:

MSI K8T Neo2-FIR (VIA chipset)
AMD 64 FX 3000 (not oc'ed)=20
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700, 256 mb =20
2- 512 kingston pc-3200 ddr (total 1mg)
Maxtor 120 gig hdd=20
Thermaltake 550 ps
Cool Master case with 5 fans
Thermaltake Venus 12=20

Thank you for all the help I might get.
Peace,
Sarrene'

To have ME working properly with more than 512MB RAM, you need to tweak the
SYSTEM.INI file with the following line in the [vcache] section

MaxFileCache=512000

- which may reduce your problems with both sticks of RAM present.

WRT your other problems, there's a good chance that the initial install was
borked, if you installed with both sticks present (in fact I'd be surprised
you were able to do it at all!), and if that's the case, then a
reformat/reinstall with only one stick present is the best way to go.

It's always possible that one (or both) of your RAM sticks is not performing
properly - download DocMemory2 from www.simmtester.com create the boot disk,
and run it overnight to check out the stick - if it fails with both present,
then run it with each in turn.

Rebooting from shutoff can be because your PC has a DSL/cable connection to
the Internet, and you have the Wake-on-LAN option active in the BIOS - or
indeed some of the other options there (W-o-R, and power off)

Rebooting while on is often caused by overheating - the CPU reaches the
critical temperature (check the BIOS) and powers down - then restarts after
it cools down a bit.

I' don't see how your system can be booting to DOS - since Win ME has no
Real-DOS mode. - are you sure about that? - what do you see on screen??
