I am unable to change your display settings to a
resolution that is higher than 640 X 480 with 16 colors.
Where do I get a display adaptor?

Hi Danielle,

This usually indicates that there is an incorrect video driver installed.
Here's some information on replacing the video driver.

Tip: Go to Start - Run and type Msconfig and press enter. On the
General Tab click advanced, and make sure "VGA 640x480x16 is
NOT checked before continuing.

To correct this you will first have to identify the video card installed.
That may include checking documentation, contacting the system
manufacturer, or opening the box and looking for identifying marks
on a video card or video chip on the mother board. Some systems
will display the Video Adapter information on the top of the screen
when the system first boots up. Some manufacturers displays a logo
screen that may cover this information. It may be able to be removed
temporarily by pressing the ESC key when the logo first appears. Once
the Video card has been identified, go to the manufactures web site,
download and install the latest video driver and install it as per there
instructions. Or the system may have shipped with a video card driver it can
also be used.

I have the same problem on a Thinkpad 770E. I just installed 98 on it.
It shows a max of 16 colors and 640x480, while the Thinkpad's
self-diagnostic shows megs of colors and SVGA resolutions.

But there is no "msconfig" on the system or on the installation CD. Is
that a 3rd party utility?

Hi Jim,

Msconfig is a MS utility that shipped with Win98.
The only reason it would be missing from the CD is
that the manufacturer of the OEM disk removed it.
Have you tried doing a search for Msconfig by going
to Start - Find - Files & folder?

I would suggest going to the following site and look
for a video and monitor driver for the 770E system
and installing them per there instructions.

First thing I did. I dug around until I found a way to turn off the
hidden attribute, then it worked.
