I don't think the format has much to do with it, but perhaps. Sounds like
you have to at least find the Georgia font and install it.

If you feel safe doing so, you can send the files to me and I'll see what I
can do. Converting things is something I have to do regularly, and my
collection of fonts is pretty large.

PS. Please do not use ALL CAPS. It is traditionally seen as shouting,
besides being difficult to read.

IIRC, Word 97 should have converters to use docs from older versions.
Also from Word help:

Share documents created in Word 97, Word 95, and Word 6.x

Microsoft Word 97 has a different file format from earlier versions of Word. If your
workgroup is using a combination of Word 97, Word 95, and Word 6.x for the Windows,
Windows NT, or Macintosh operating system, your workgroup can exchange documents and
templates among these versions.
You can open documents created in Word 95 or Word 6.x directly in Word 97. All data
and formatting created in Word 95 or Word 6.x are fully supported in Word 97.
If your workgroup is gradually upgrading to Word 97, some users may have to share
documents with users of earlier versions of Word. There are several strategies for
sharing documents:

· Save Word 97 documents in Word 6.0/95 format. It is recommended that you use this
strategy if your workgroup includes a large installed base of Word 6.0/95 users and
you are planning a gradual upgrade to Word 97.
· Open Word 97 documents directly in Word 95 or Word 6.x by using the Word 97
converter. It is recommended that you use this strategy if your workgroup includes a
large installed base of Word 6.0/95 users and you are planning a one-time upgrade to
Word 97.

· Save Word 97 documents in Word 97 & 6.0/95-RTF format.
· Save Word 97 documents in RTF format.

To see a table that describes the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy,

..

What do you want to do?

Save a Word 97 document in Word 6.0/95 format
Open a Word 97 document from Word 95 or Word 6.x
Save a Word 97 document in Word 97 & 6.0/95-RTF format
Save a Word 97 document in RTF format

More from Word Help:

The fonts are different in the converted document.

Documents created in other word-processing programs may contain fonts you don't have
installed on your computer. If you open a document that contains fonts you don't have
installed on your computer, Word substitutes fonts you do have. To control which
fonts are substituted, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the
Compatibility tab. Click Font Substitution, and then select the options you want.

It seems to be a bit deeper of an issue, Brian, if even after opening the
document the user can't change the font.

There's more to this than meets the eye.

It may still be a compatibility/converter issue. What now leaves me to wonder is who
(person), or what (printer or other text editor), installed the Georgia/n font. My
Win98SE does not have it, MS Office 95 Pro does not have it, MS Office 97 Pro does
not have it. My Win XP Pro has it as does MS Office XP.

Well, according to a quick search in KB, here's a (probably incomplete) list
of packages that include it:
Age of Mythology
FrontPage 98
Publisher98
Office2K
IE 5 and up

The OP did say "Georgian", not Georgia... Perhaps an Eastern European font?

CapsLock key first. Then:

Google "word viewer" (with the quotes) gave 148,000 hits. The first
hit will take you to MS page where you can download (free) a program
that will open Word95 documents.

Your problem does not appear to be a lack of a font but more likely is
a file format problem although I am surprised that Word97 won't open a
Word95 document. If the Word Viewer doesn't open your file then you
probably have a corrupted document.
