I'm wondering what the compression agent on Windows 98 is
for - if I compressed my drive will I get more free
memory? I'm new to this - hope it's not a stupid question.

It is really not worth the possible hassle (my opinion) and DriveSpace 3
does not work on a fat 32 partition. If you need more drive space, clean up
your drive (empty the temp folder, recycle bin and temporary internet file
folder) and uninstall unneeded software. You could also add a drive.
