Wow, what was that about then? I highlighted a nasty post right above
this thread & pressed DEL. Next thing I knew over 7600 were deleted. And
my .dbx of this NG was no where to be found in the OE store. It was gone
from the left pane as well.

It took a while to read them all back in. Courageously, I deleted that
nasty post once more, this time to no ill effect. Hmmph!

Can it be deleting the bottom post wipes out the entire .dbx? Second
time, it no longer was at bottom (when it went well.).

And people are always trying to get me to use a newsreader.
I think I'll stick to the web method.
I can do enough damage to my system on my own. Don't need
any help.

Nope, it wasn't that. Deleting the bottom guy did not wipe a thing but
him.

And I have to doubt very strongly I had every post highlighted when I

There seem to be some strange things happening occasionally when one =
accesses this newsgroup via OE, such as, some messages from a =
conversation disappear (no rules are set up), but when one resets the =
whole thing and re-downloads headers, those messages come back (i.e. =
they are still on the server). Don't know if this behaviour can be =
attributed to the server or perhaps to the way OE interacts with the =
server?

Strange, indeed, but not as horrific as the devastation I have twice
experienced. The first time it happened, it happened to everyone. This
time it was just me, which is WORSE.

For disappearances of occasional posts...

1. Perhaps one has struck the DEL key here/there.
2. Perhaps crossposting is involved.
3. Perhaps a message rule does it.
4. There has been speculation that some disappear of miswritten
censorship routines.
5. I've seen it said that more than one physical computer holds this NG,
& they are not always in synch. Furthermore, every "synchronize" may be
accessing a different one.
6. XP-dust can do it too.

SHIFT+DEL wipes out the entire .dbx-- GONE from the OE Store, GONE from
the left pane of OE-- only the server name remaining? LORD! (I suppose
there actually is a chance that I held SHIFT, as habitually I do, when
deleting files.)

I suppose CTRL+A will highlight every post. At this point, I fear doing
it. Certainly I did not do it back then.

Indeed I do need a manicure, & I'll do it as soon as I'm a bit less
itchy.

WTF? Was the focus on the NG (highlighted) in Folders pane when you
SHIFT+DEL'ed?

Keyboard Shortcuts (Win9x)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=126449

WinXP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=301583

OE Shortcuts:

CTRL+SHIFT+A = Mark all messages as Read

ALT+F, ALT+W; ALT+F,F,F = Work Offline; Compact all folders

Did You Know?...

In WinXP-SP2, Background Compacting is *gone* (hoorah!) and, when manually
compacting, there are options to

- Delete read message bodies in newsgroups

- Delete news messages XX days after being downloaded

If you haven't compacted after closing OE 100 times, you're prompted to do
so.

I WASN'T IN Explorer (at "G:\Outlook Express Store") when it happened!
I was in OE. I highlighted the bottom post in the Message List pane, &
as normal it went into the Preview pane. It was nasty. So, I clicked
delete. Next thing I knew, every message in the Message List began to
delete. Moments later they were all GONE, & the NG itself disappeared
from OE's Folders Pane. I went to "G:\Outlook Express Store", &
everything was there, EXCEPT microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion.dbx.

I'm sure it took over an hour to resubscribe & get it all back, 40 days
worth.

Would it happen like that, if really I had R-Clkd the NG in the Folders
Pane & selected "Unsubscribe"? (I guess there's one chance in 854 that
is what I actually did do.)

Please, don't sprinkle XP-dust on me!

Oops, you were talking about the Folders pane in OE. I was obviously in
this NG, but... I'm not positive which of the three panes had the focus.
The intent of course was to have it on the Message List.

SHIFT+DEL will wipe it all & Unsubscibe, if the focus was in the Folders
Pane? (I must try it soon.)
